Summary

After the collapse of the Old Kingdom, Egypt rose again in the Middle Kingdom, a period of reunification, military expansion, and cultural flourishing. This episode follows the Theban prince Mentuhotep II who reunified Egypt around 2055 BCE, founding the 11th Dynasty. We explore the military campaigns of Senusret III, who pushed Egypt's borders into Nubia and built fortresses like Buhen, and the administrative reforms of Amenemhat I, who moved the capital to Itjtawy. On the cultural side, we discuss the exquisite jewelry of the 12th Dynasty, the realistic portraiture that replaced the idealized Old Kingdom style, and the literary masterpiece 'The Story of Sinuhe'. Lucas and Luna also examine the debate over whether the Middle Kingdom truly ended with external invasion or internal decay, and how the Hyksos period followed. Finally, we touch on the famous 'Instructions of Amenemhat I', a political testament that influenced later Egyptian thought.
