About this listen

A Warhammer 40,000 Audiobook

Cerastes, Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers, is bowed but not broken. He returns to finish what he started – converting a holy Imperial world to the worship of Chaos.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE
David Annandale brings back Cerastes, star of his short story Sacred Hate, and this time he's filled with righteous vengeance. But has he taken on more than he can handle as he contends with the hated Adepta Sororitas of the Order of the Thorn?

THE STORY
Legitur is a world devoted to the sacred writings of the Imperial Creed. Endlessly producing mountains of scripture, it considers itself an exemplar of piety. But there are deep secrets here – undreamt of by the ruling Ecclesiarchy, hidden amongst the shadows of the towering paper hives – and one being who was born of these secrets.

Cerastes, Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers, has returned to the world he once called home. Though his host has been crushed by the fearsome Palatine Aesura and her Sororitas of the Order of the Thorn, Cerastes’ dark ambition is undaunted. He will have his revenge. He will resurrect the Eightfold Bane. And he will convert the world he despises to the worship of Chaos. Legitur is about to receive the Word, and it will burn with the fires of revolution.

Written by David Annandale. Narrated by Tom Alexander. Runtime 9 hours and 53 minutes approx.

I usually don’t like word bearers, but this audiobook was excellent. It has all the good ingredients.

Quality stuff

Or that’s how it appears as our main protagonist makes error after error (maybe it’s word errors not bearers) I enjoyed the ruination of a world from within and seeing yet again the absolute fanaticism of the SoB, narrator was fine but John Banks would been better (listen to him narrate Plague Garden)

Hapless bearer of the word

This is a very well documented account of civilisational decline through manipulation, corruption and bad choices in the face of pride and arrogance. So much hubris on both sides, and insane consequences. It gives a true glimpse into how really attractive Chaos can be to the downtrodden masses and elites alike. It’s incredible how you root for the Word Bearers throughout, despite knowing what they want. I felt envious of those being freed from the shackles of miserable daily life in exchange for the hope Chaos can actually instil in mankind. The main character is convincing and, dare I say it, quite human to his followers. It’s not a side you often see from a Chaos Astartes. There are some great character arcs here, and many twists and turns. The outcome is not foregone conclusion. I’d say this is the best 40K book I’ve listened to. I’ve always appreciated how the Word Bearers operate, and this is an iconic example. There is room to expand on this novel as well, and I sincerely hope the author is writing onwards.

Probably my favourite 40K book now

An amazing and engaging take on the word bearers and chaos cultists in 40k combined with a narration performance that goes above and beyond anything else ive heard on audiable makes me highly recommend apostle to anyone interested in chaos space marines, word bearers or chaos cults.

11/10 the best book ive listened to on here
