Critic reviews

"Sounding majestic, theatrical, and ever so slightly sinister, veteran BBC actor Andrew Wincott has just the right voice to introduce the listener to three key selections of one of the greatest works of English literature. In this 17th-century work, Milton masterfully combines classical mythology, epic narrative, and biblical allusions to present Satan as a flawed, demanding humanlike character. No poet had ever done that before. In Book IX, when Adam and Eve are separated in the Garden of Eden and Satan takes advantage of the situation to tempt Eve with the forbidden apple, all of humankind comes tumbling down. Wincott's exceptional command of the poem's pace and flowing free-verse rhythms makes this presentation absolutely understandable and, best of all, wonderfully entertaining." Superb narration

I’ve read Paradise Lost and encountered plenty of other recitals of this wonderful epic, but this version of Books I, II, and IX is by far my favourite. It’s on another level really, the narrator’s performance is expressive without being overdone or too much, adding a wonderful richness to the lines. Highly recommended in this format. Oh, and yes, I would most definitely bite the proffered fruit…!

My favourite recital of a classic epic!

As a non-native English speaker who had never tried audiobooks before, I found this one great.

I listened to it twice, the first time without the text (for the challenge) and the second time with it. Everything was so clear, I barely had any trouble understanding the words, even without reading them. The hard part is keeping track of what’s happening due to the complex language. But it’s not impossible if you listen to it with proper attention.

The narration is very engaging; it’s evident who’s speaking in every dialogue, and you can feel all the drama. When I listened whilst reading, I also noticed I would have had a harder time reading on my own. The narration truly helps to make sense of it all.

The student guide is super fun (and adorable). However, I must admit I expected it to have a bit more information, like important details I missed or parts that were not easy to get on a first read. Instead, it served as a thumbs-up to everything I had already grasped. Still, it’s a nice and light touch after all three books, and it’s obviously well-planned and well-written.

Great experience
