About this listen

In this portal fantasy, an accountant reincarnated as a fae assassin must battle, barter, and grind to survive in a world filled with magical dangers.

When forensic accountant SJ is crushed by a rogue tree on her way home from the local pub, her death is as absurd as it is abrupt. But fate has a twisted sense of humour: instead of being sentenced to eternal oblivion, SJ's reborn in Amathera—a vibrant fantasy landscape full of magic, monsters, and a game-like System that really wishes she hadn't read the fine print.

Armed with her sassy and overly sarcastic AI companion, Dave, and the questionable skills of a fae assassin, SJ is thrust into this mystical new world. But there's one problem: she never agreed to the terms and conditions, and now she's the one person operating completely free of the System's rules. Drawing the attention of local gods, dragons, and everything in between, she's destined to become an Amatherean celebrity.

With oddities such as high-level enemies and unique gear drops at every turn, finding her footing will be no easy task in this place where reputation matters. SJ will need Dave's guidance if she wants to level up and survive the challenges thrown her way. Only then can she help the inhabitants of her quaint starter town of Killic and begin to uncover the complex mysteries of Amathera.

And as outside pressures mount, SJ's starting to realize her death was only the first glitch in the System . . .

A solid enough first book, an interesting world and fun enough characters. The relationship between the two main characters and how it develops over the story is well done and it feels genuine. Their interactions bring forth a good amount of humour which is only marginally held back by the exposition dumps Dave will regularly unload.

But there are multiple points that are just frustrating to listen to. Most of these revolve around the mc just being stupid or making dumb decisions, and considering she is mostly portrayed as a fairly competent character these moments stand out and make me rethink if I want to continue with this series or not.

So an overall solid litrpg fantasy adventure but go in expecting a bumpy ride.

Good but Frustrating

This is a good first book in the series, the narration is particularly good with distinctive voices for all characters. The story is well written with a mix of fighting and daily life, a bit more of the daily life but I think it's balanced well. My attention was kept throughout and I completed the book within 2 days.
World building is good and the levelling system, although a bit complicated in the beginning, is explained well.
Overall the story is well written and narrated.
I recommend this book to anyone with a passing interest in fantasy novels but especially to those who like the LitRPG genre.

An Enjoyable Book

Im still going to look out for book 2. However the story really needs to pick up.

For a story saying the MC is an anomaly, very lucky in her encounters and such, she is very incompetent and borderline stupid, how do you read the Terms and conditions for hours at the beginning yet dont read the full extent of your own darn god gifted gear.

The progression is slow, like very slow and for a "unique" fae assassin character she does close to none of that. Its mostly slice of life daily routine stuff. Theres potential here but its not been executed well.

Not well executed.

We absolutely loved One Flew Over the Dragon’s Nest!

It’s so rare to find a book that both me and my 7-year-old son genuinely enjoy, but this one has become our book. Every night we read a chapter together, and every morning we’re still talking about it on the school run — guessing what will happen next and debating our favourite characters. We both love Dave 😊😂

It has everything kids (and adults!) could want — gaming-style quests, mythical creatures, high-stakes adventure — but it also has enough depth to keep me completely hooked too. The world feels vivid and exciting, and the story really pulls you in.

More than anything, I love that it’s given us something to share. It’s sparked imagination, conversation, and a lot of “just one more chapter” moments.

A brilliant fantasy novel for families to enjoy together. 🐉✨

Make time, it's hard to put down 😀😀 Wild, fiery, and impossible to ignore. 🐉🔥
