About this listen

RETIREMENT WILL HAVE TO WAIT.

When former serial killer Carol takes her place in a luxury retirement home, she begins to find her feet with a small new group of friends. If she can only keep her past hidden, maybe she has a chance at happiness.

That's when she discovers that, absurdly, every other one of Sheldon Oaks' residents was involved in the law somehow. It's not long before her true identity is leaked, and when a former police commissioner resident is murdered, naturally all eyes turn to her...

Now she must solve the case to prove her innocence - just as her new friends start their own investigations into whether there is more than one killer at Sheldon Oaks.

Critic reviews

Witty, fast-paced, and plenty surprising, Craig's cracked cozy goes down smooth. It's a delightfully twisted romp. (Publisher's Weekly - Starred Review)
A fine mystery whose mordant humor makes it outstanding. (Kirkus - Starred Review)
[A] winning mixture of humor and seriousness, baking and bingo (FirstClue - Book of the Week)
Delightful, funny and hard to put down. (Jonn Elledge, bestselling author of A History of the World in 47 Borders)
What a lovely romp - as it were - Fergus is so funny and brilliant. (Miranda Hart)
Carol, a female serial killer, and her unlikely cast of new friends are a joy to get to know in this unique and twisty murder mystery. (E.C. Nevin, author of A Novel Murder)
Craig clearly relies on his background as actor, comedian, and TV writer to achieve pitch-perfect timing in making murder most fun (Booklist - starred review)
Making murder funny is a delicate business, but actor and comedian Craig manages it with aplomb in a wry, witty style
Equal parts cozy mystery and redemption tale, this is a brisk, mordantly funny romp about second chances and the inconvenient persistence of reputation

I listened to this in one sitting, I enjoyed every minute, loved everything about it I could picture it all so clearly, it really made me smile and I laughed a good few times.
Midway through I was already searching for more of the authors books.
I’d love to see this made into tv or film.

Absolutely well worth a credit

One of the great things about Fergus Craig’s Le Carre novels is the way they unashamedly take the p!ss out of crime genre novels. A particular highlight of this is his narration. The plot, jokes and narration are a combined performance and are just insanely funny because of how over the top they are.

I had hoped he was going to do the same here, but alas, no. It is too close to the source material so, for me, it falls flat. The narration is also not great. Too soft and cosy.

Warning - this is not Roger Le Carre
