About this listen

Don’t kill the messengers.

As a bodyguard for the King’s Envoys, Gen is content with her life of traveling, drinking wine, and hitting things with her sword. It’s the perfect job. Until the King sends her and her friend Cordyn into war-torn enemy territory on a mission to deliver vital military intelligence to an allied nation.

The problem? The mission is a sham.

Gen is tasked with determining if Cordyn is a spy who is selling information to the enemy. Cordyn is the worst kind of libertine: brash, arrogant, and on the run from half the husbands in the kingdom, but Gen can’t imagine him betraying her or their nation.

With obtuse bandits, vengeful mages, and a resolute lutist, they embark on a daring rescue mission, complicated by Cordyn’s increasingly complex schemes. As ominous enemy plots surface, Gen and Cordyn must decide what matters most. Their nation, or their friends.

A rollicking fantasy adventure for fans of Dungeons and Dragons, Nicholas Eames, and Michael J. Sullivan.

This one was such a fun, and slightly silly(in the best way), fantasy adventure/quest book!

The character work was fantastic in this one and to me, really what pushed this into 5-star rating territory. We get 3 POV's and each is voicey and distinct, never allowing any confusion as to who we're following. The characters are also very consistent and realised, they don't change their personalities to conform to a pre-determined plot(something that's a pet peeve of mine).

The plot was also solid, subtly changing its course as we go on but it all makes sense for the characters and their motivations so it felt like the natural progression of things.

I did have minor quibbles with the world building: it didn't feel consistent to me(I could have misunderstood or misheard things in places) but things like "nobody can go to the isle" and then a few chapters later half the cast seem to be going there without issue. Also the occurence of snow and ripe grown-outdoors tomatoes within what seemed like 2 days ride of each other made me scratch my head.

In the end, I didn't care about those little inconsistencies because the characters were so fun and well realised and the prose itself was so smooth it made the book super enjoyable.

The audiobook was brilliant, the narrator did a fantastic job making each voice distinct without going over the top and I feel like the narration added a lot to the already well-rounded characterisation.

Overall a 4.5 rounded up for me!

So much fun!

I’m not usually one to write reviews, but I enjoyed The Envoys of War so much that I immediately picked up The Pawns of Havoc. The story is compelling and engaging, and I especially loved the dynamics between the characters. Without giving anything away, the buildup toward the ending had me completely hooked and eager for more.

A huge shout-out to narrator Laurence Knott—I've been listening to more and more of their work lately, and they consistently nail each character’s personality in a way that keeps me fully invested.

Great story, leaving you wanting more.

Enjoyed the story, for the most part. Really didn't care for the narration, though. I didn't like the accent, and much of the time I could barely tell the characters apart.

Good story
