About this listen

In the gloom of her hotel, a mother readies to rejoin her past. Feverish nightmares meet the chilling light of day in this haunting short story from USA Today bestselling author Catriona Ward.

Room 17 was the last stop on her husband and son’s journey. Eight years after their deaths, Stella books the same room, hoping to commune with their memories. But as she tries to sleep, disturbing and urgent visions blur the lines between reality and the supernatural, and the other side sends a terrifying message.

Catriona Ward’s Night and Day in Misery is part of The Shivers, a collection of haunting stories that reveal the otherworldly terrors all around us. Once you know, there’s no going back. Read or listen to each story in one unsettling sitting.

Despite its brevity, this ghost story has a lot to say, and it says it beautifully. What really struck me was the main character. She’s not running, she’s not screaming, she’s just coasting along on the inexorable railway tracks of depression.

It’s an unusual, believable and refreshing perspective in what is a very well trodden concept.

This felt fresh. It felt sincere. But most importantly; it felt.

Despite its grim tone, it never veers into misery for misery’s sake. It’s not “misery porn”; instead it takes an unapologetic and raw look at difficult themes of suicide and depression and throws in some spooky nonsense mixed in with a healthy portion of intrigue. I didn’t come away from this all sad and bummed out. It’s raw, but there’s also something beautiful about it.

I hadn’t encountered Catriona Ward’s work before, but I’ll for sure be adding her books to my wish list.

I’m glad I read this

I'm not a fan of short stories, but this one was really rather good. Worth a listen.
