About this listen

1957. Sonny is working on a whaling ship in the South Atlantic, reckoning with the most vicious storms he has ever seen. It’s a brutal way to make a living. When he finally returns to his Shetland home to build a life with his wife and young son, the legacy of his time at sea is felt by all of them. In present day Shetland, Jack is an old man, living alone in the cottage where he grew up, in the shadow of a hill. And it is here, one evening, that something appears on his doorstep. Something that throws off the rhythm of his solitary existence in the most profound way. This is a story of unlikely friendship, longing, the power of music and the pull of home. It is about a life revisited – and reimagined.

That Beautiful Atlantic Waltz is a soulful and moving exploration of the notion of home and belonging, from one of Scotland's trailblazing literary writers

I was intrigued by the description of this book but was completely unprepared for how absorbing and moving it was going to be; many tears were shed. Without doubt the most beautiful book I have listened to, I’ll definitely be returning to this one. I’m not a country music fan but really enjoyed the inclusion of the songs throughout the story; admittedly I didn’t pay as much attention to the earlier ones but then realised each one links to the story and adds to its telling.
Immediately went and purchased other books by this author and looking forward to being carried away by his beautiful writing.

It’s so nice to have a book narrated by the author and Malachy Tallack’s melodic Shetland accent adds so much to the experience of this book.

A real gem of a book

I felt the start was very slow but realised that it was part of the poetry and movement that made the man Jack come alive from the page. I felt frustration at times with Jack that he wasn’t forthcoming enough but then that helped me reflect on the why question within myself. Great story. Loved the music and the moments of silence too.

It unites with my many emotions

Such a beautifully written and read story that I felt lonely when I had finished the book. I missed its company.

A life in the slower lane

Not the Shetland I know. This depressing book is mostly about a reclusive man who makes friends with a cat and a child. It portrays rural Shetland as being without any sense of community, which is far from true. An American music theme runs throughout increasing the sense of dislocation. Yes, Country and Western music was popular after the Second World War stimulated (so I was told) by a box of vinyl LPs that turned up in Lerwick. There wasn’t anything else, and the genre spread throughout the islands. In this novel it just makes the whole story even sadder. Maybe that’s what the author intended. He certainly reads like a funeral director.
