THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES NO.1 BESTSELLER; LONGLISTED FOR THE WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION 2025

A publishing event ten years in the making – a searing, exquisite new novel by the bestselling and award-winning author of Americanah and We Should All Be Feminists – the story of four women and their loves, longings and desires.

'The return of a literary titan' TELEGRAPH

CHOSEN AS A SUNDAY TIMES, GUARDIAN, OBSERVER, FINANCIAL TIMES, INDEPENDENT, TELEGRAPH, GQ and COSMOPOLITAN BOOK OF 2025.

Chiamaka is a Nigerian travel writer living in America. Alone in the midst of the pandemic, she recalls her past lovers and grapples with her choices and regrets. Zikora, her best friend, is a lawyer who has been successful at everything until — betrayed and brokenhearted — she must turn to the person she thought she needed least. Omelogor, Chiamaka’s bold, outspoken cousin, is a financial powerhouse in Nigeria who begins to question how well she knows herself. And Kadiatou, Chiamaka’s housekeeper, is proudly raising her daughter in America – but faces an unthinkable hardship that threatens all she has worked to achieve.

In Dream Count, Adichie trains her fierce eye on these women in a sparkling, transcendent novel that takes up the very nature of love itself. Is true happiness ever attainable or is it just a fleeting state? And how honest must we be with ourselves in order to love, and to be loved? A trenchant reflection on the choices we make and those made for us, on daughters and mothers, on our interconnected world, Dream Count pulses with emotional urgency and poignant, unflinching observations on the human heart, in language that soars with beauty and power. It confirms Adichie’s status as one of the most exciting and dynamic writers on the literary landscape.

I loved many aspects of this novel, so much resonates with my life.

Especially love lost and the effort we pour into relationships, to make them work.

Thank you.

Beautifully Written

I absolutely loved this - I expected to because Chimamanda Ngozie Adiche is one of my favourite authors. But this was breathtaking. There are so many beautifully painted moments and emotions that felt so authentic to my experience of being a woman. And yes, I’ve seen some criticism of this book that there is too much reference to men making it disappointing but in reality, to me, it was about so much more than that. And of course for some women, men and relationships are hugely important - likewise some novels by men touch upon love - this doesn’t diminish its power in my eyes. One of the most important things for me was in the perception of life through the lens of people from a different continent, although I read a lot of Nigerian literature, as well as other countries’ authors, I seldom feel like there is the perspective shift that allows an insight into how self centred the American and British cultural lens is. Countless times I wanted to make note of a pithy insight. In this book is so much of race, gender and humanity. I was so drawn in to each character’s world and loved them so much that I feel like I’ve had four great novels in one. Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche is so clever, and skilled in her craft, that this book has made me want to go back to all her previous work and read it again.

Absolutely loved it, another insightful and moving book from one of my favourite authors

There’s a particular skill that Chimamanda has that is rarely seen in other authors… a use of words, a turn of phrase that is almost unique in modern day writing. Her ‘voice’ always shines through in her writing. What seems like a normal meander through the lives of 4 women… is transformed into literary genius by the actual words used to tell this story! Some people have felt a sense of ‘so what?’ after reading… wanting a conclusion of sorts with regards the love lives of the 3 friends. But I think that’s the beauty of this story… it’s a dream count… life continues without being tied up in a neat bow. There is no satisfying ‘the end’ to our lives… we are ALWAYS left wanting more! As perfectly illustrated by this story. I wanted to hear more… yet was wholly satisfied with what I had heard. I’m sad it took the death of Chimamanda’s mother to write this book, but I hope happy occasions lead to her writing more! We can’t keep waiting years to really get the joy of reading a true true master of her craft!

Thoroughly immersive writing!

I have read this author's 2 previous books, but I think I would have found it very difficult to read this one. Having not only the author but also other readers, it brought the stories of all 4 women and other characters to life. Also, knowing that some of the tales are based on actual events adds an extra dimension.
Yes, it's long, but oh so interesting to understand more about African culture and cuisine.

WONDERFUL, INTELLIGENT AND CHALLENGING
