Flat-out incredible. Buckle up. This is heart-pounding storytelling at its finest. I dare you to try and put this amazing book down. It's Crichton-smart, Patterson-paced, incredibly cinematic and it just feels like a giant summer movie. I don’t know if it’s Patterson taking over from Crichton, or Clarke Peters’ narration, but I found this very hard going, even though I only got a few chapters in.

Peters sounds like he’s either reading the book for the first time, or is reading through bifocals, with pauses and changes in the rhythm of the narration seeming to indicate getting to the end of a new page and adjusting focal distance to the top of the next.

Audible, please put some time in on getting the original Crichton books recorded/uploaded such as Airframe, and possibly get a producer to sit in on the recording sessions.

Edit: I’ve just heard the beginning of the Audible.com version of this, read by Scott Brick. It’s probably a rights issue, but why isn’t that version just used over here in the UK? Maybe the same reason Brick’s recording of The Lost World isn’t available here.

I made it to chapter 8.

James Patterson said you could tell when he took over the writing of this story from Crichton's original manuscript. It must have been very early on... I have read or listened to nearly everything Crichton has written, and this was not at his level. There should have been so many more dramatic moments in the story. I'm sorry Mr Clarke Peters, but I found your narration to be a mix of hesitancy at odd times, delays (between words) that shouldn't be there, simply not fluid, and I felt your reading made the story rather hard to follow. At times your pronunciation was strange.
The audiobooks I enjoy the most are the ones where the narrator has a rather neutral sounding voice and does not overemphasize the story with voice tone or inflection. I don't want to think about the narrator. A distinctly recognisable voice is not the best.

Disappointing

This book made a promising start and then lost direction, plausibility and any reason for enjoyment. The middle section followed a pattern of introduce a 2 dimensional character that we don't care about and then kill them off and repeat. The ending was so poor it is on a par with "it was all just a dream". The voice 'talent' stumbles over the pronunciation of many Hawaiian names in a tone similar to that of someone doing a movie trailer. I imagine he was distracted by how bad this book was and wondering if he should fire his agent. I imagine someone is turning in their grave.

imagine the voice over man from movie trailers reading you a very substandard book.

Sorry but the narrator is not for me, he pauses in the most obscure places, there's no real energy in his reading, despite obvious attempts from the author to create tension it wasn't ever apparent in the narration,.. I didn't enjoy the book and I'd say that's likely why,
I wish I'd read the reviews first,

I suspect this one would be better read yourself.

The story itself is ok (although far from either Crichton's or Patterson's best). However the narration is utterly awful. I really struggled to finish listening to this one. The cadence used by Scott Brick is incomprehensible and jerky. I don't know if he was trying to imitate the style of the Islanders, which makes it even worse, or if he is simply utterly inept.

Really not worth it. Two stars would not recommend!

Utterly awful narration!
