About this listen
A young man and his axe, along with a magical life he never asked for....
Larek Holsten is different from most people living in the Kingdom of Androthe, where his seven-foot-tall frame is looked at with suspicion and anger from its shorter residents; but as long as it helps him become the best Logger he can be, he doesn’t let it bother him all that much. He and his best friend, an axe with a powerful Fusion that causes it to become sharper and stronger than a normal tool, are feared by the trees in the magical forest north of his home, as he can fell the quickly growing monoliths faster than anyone else in the community.
Unfortunately, after visiting the local village, a deliberate misunderstanding lands Larek in trouble; as a result, he is taken away from his family and the only home he has ever known. Along the way, his dormant magical potential is discovered by those more knowledgeable than him, and he is ordered to attend some sort of academy for Mages.
The problem? Contrary to many who might jump at the chance of wielding powerful magic to fight the monsters that threaten the towns and cities around the Kingdom, Larek has absolutely no desire to become a Mage, especially when he has no choice in the matter. All he wants is to be allowed to return home to his family and to chop down the trees in the Rushwood Forest.
But once he discovers a unique talent that stems from his newly unlocked latent power, he might just have to stick around to see what he can do....
This weak-to-strong MC story contains LitRPG elements such as character progression and statistics, as well as a heavy crafting emphasis. No explicit sexual content or harems.
©2023 Jonathan Brooks (P)2023 Jonathan BrooksI can understand what the narrator tryes for the mc is suppose to have a deep voice for his age but unfortunately it really messes with the fact that he's a teenager. I had to rethink alot of the mc aktions and thought for he sounds like a rather old person.
in my eyes ther is a rather random death of a side character and it kinde ruined the rest of the book for me for it was not nessessery for the plot.
lastly and that might just be me personal but I don't like the MC's aktion after finding out he is totally op. he's not trying to find out what to do with it and rambles on about fixing his "best friend" (nearly forgot about that bit. it's super strange! it's not even a magic or talking thing so why? theris no explanation therefor. it turned something potential funny to just super wyrd). well in the end it comes down to the fact that I like 0 to hero books where the mc has the drive and brains to struggles on to power. this on is more a 0 to hero book where the mc needs to fix his mentality to do anything for he is op from the start but a bit messed up from his childhood to not see it. (which is also not really explained)
well where to start

This book takes a very long time to get going and is pretty dull to start. There is some questionable writing at first and some terrible characters but as the crafting gets going, the story gets a lot better. So much so that I felt compelled to vent and write a review part way through as I was so frustrated with the book. I’ve now amended this several times. I’m now hooked with 2hrs to go.
The biggest problem I had is the narration of the character voices. The MC is just SO dumb at first that I nearly stopped listening and returned the book. Luckily I’ve held on as there was a strong strand of “what happens next” to keep me going.
MC’s roommate is probably the worst voice which sounds like a five-year-old voice with a lisp and very annoying mannerisms. I’ve kind of got used to it but still find myself telling him to shut up out loud 🤣
The narration starts poorly. The general narration is ok to start but I think gets better through the book. The MC narration definitely gets better as his skill in talking improves. I get what both the writer and narrator were doing but it still grates so much to start, to the point I nearly gave up with it.
The magic and crafting is very detailed and this adds a lot to the believability. One of the strongest elements of the story. The stat readouts are done with a very light touch so don’t get in the way. Some other books are really bad at this and have near constant readouts. One of the troubles with a narrated book vs printed where you can just skip it if not interested.
So a mixed bag for me - terrible to start with but enough of a story to keep me going with narration that gets much better.
Not sure if it’s deliberate but there are also multiple occasions of MC holding his “best friend” in his hand! Rather odd. Maybe just my warped sense of humour.
Struggling with this to start but got better.

Narrator should differ a bit more when Laric is thinking/talkin as it is in some parts hard to know when hes doing either. But overall great
Great coming of age book
