Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Scattered Minds explodes the myth of attention deficit disorder as genetically based - and offers real hope and advice for children and adults who live with the condition.

Gabor Maté is a revered physician who specializes in neurology, psychiatry and psychology - and himself has ADD. With wisdom gained through years of medical practice and research, Scattered Minds is a must-listen for parents - and for anyone interested how experiences in infancy shape the biology and psychology of the human brain.

Scattered Minds:

- Demonstrates that ADD is not an inherited illness, but a reversible impairment and developmental delay

- Explains that in ADD, circuits in the brain whose job is emotional self-regulation and attention control fail to develop in infancy - and why

- Shows how 'distractibility' is the psychological product of life experience

- Allows parents to understand what makes their ADD children tick, and adults with ADD to gain insights into their emotions and behaviours

- Expresses optimism about neurological development even in adulthood

- Presents a programme of how to promote this development in both children and adults

Definitely worth reading if you have ADHD

The most useful information for me was learning that a big reason why I am distracted is because my emotional needs aren’t being met.

Just brilliant!

I have never before heard someone describe what it is like to be in my brain, to live my daily struggles which seem so effortless to others. Truly brilliant, an excellent read/listen. I would, as always, love Gabor to narrate his own words as I find his voice so soothing, but ironically, it is most likely his ADD which makes this not possible. Daniel always does a great job in his father’s absence.

Love!

I’ve listened to The Myth of Normal and The Body Says No and I didn’t expect to be as engaged with this one as ADHD doesn’t directly impact me, but because it is actually mostly about attachment and schools I found it so relevant and it is not an exaggeration to say that I was “rewinding” a lot to re listen and absorb properly.

Great insights

As an adult with ADHD, it's challenging to get one's mind around the entire complexity of [all] the mind states. This book gave a fantastic and relatable explanation of what AADD can look like and the ways in which different approaches may help. I can imagine reading this for your children with ADD would be a game changer. The only thing which would improve the 🎶 experience would be if read by Gabor himself (instead of his son).

An Empathetic and Holistic Approach

Maté works to provide the reader with a well-researched and grounded framework for ADD/ADHD as one of both neurology and childhood experience.

This more holistic view shows the reader how an abusive, neglectful, or simply inadequate childhood environment can hinder the development of those with particularly sensitive neurologies.

As someone with ADHD, and having read extensively around the topic of childhood trauma, I highly recommend this book. It has not only helped me to wrap a number of concepts into one integrated whole, but also given me a greater capacity for self-compassion and a direction forward in my own journey of healing.

Insightful and extraordinarily transparent

I loved that in this work. Gabor explores the true nature of ADD, and in so doing offers a road through the confusing nature of the state of mind, and a light at the end of the tunnel for those searching for answers for either themselves or their children, or both. A truly wonderful and enlightening read.

Amazingly insightful and enlightening. Gabor has a way of explaining complex matters in an easily understandable way. Genius!

Chapter 25 is one of the most impactful chapters of a book I have ever read/listened to. Hugely liberating and contains many penny drop moments.
