About this listen

'Absolutely gripping from the word go' Alexis Conran, Times Radio

'A convincing insight into the terror and adrenaline rush of war' Mail on Sunday

Damien Lewis's new bestseller tells the action-packed, riveting story of the band of mavericks and visionaries who made the SAS. Using hitherto untold stories and new archival sources, Damien Lewis follows one close-knit band of warriors from the SAS foundation through to the Italian landings - chronicling the extraordinary part they played as the tide of the Second World War truly turned in the Allies' favour.

This is a narrative of wall-to-wall do-or-die action and daring, chronicling the exploits of some of the most highly-decorated soldiers of the twentieth-century.

'Damien Lewis, bestselling author, describes the extraordinary bravery of Paddy Mayne and, it seems strange to say, the humanity of Mayne ... Brilliant' Nihal Arthanayake, BBC Radio 5 Live

'The depth of research is astounding' Belfast Telegraph

Overall I thought this book was excellent. I think Damien should leave the narrating to someone else in future.

Great story

He has written a wonderful book but please, don't ever narrate another book. There was a really boring monotone which nearly made me stop listening after a couple of chapters and the mispronounciation of so many words.

Dreadful narration

A real look inside the awesome story of how the sas begun…. Couldn’t wait for next chapter

Fantastic and true, a real page turner!

The majority of people my age (74) would have prior knowledge of the SAS but probably not know how exceptional were those first servers and how much of a home based battle they faced just to exist as a fighting force. Beset by negative opinions from the majority on high it’s testament to their resolve that they came out the other side.

Highly informative

This was a more in depth record of the start of the SAS and the impact that they had on the war in the desert than books that I've read/listened to in the past. They were ingenious, brave, driven and a little bit mad. Sterling, Lewis and Mayne are legends in the history of the regiment. My only criticism is the narration by Damien Lewis, it was flat and uninspiring and could have had a detrimental effect on the story had he not written such a great story. I went and bought the second volume straight away!

Unique and driven men
