About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'I've written three books and our deal is over.' That's what reluctant author Anthony Horowitz tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne in an awkward meeting. The truth is that Anthony has got other things on his mind.

His new play, a thriller called 'Mindgame', is about to open at the famous Vaudeville theatre in Shoreditch. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night.

The play is not enjoyed by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Harriet Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing. The next day, Throsby is stabbed in the heart with an ornamental dagger which, it turns out, belongs to Anthony, and which has his fingerprints all over it.

Anthony is arrested by an old enemy . . . Detective Inspector Cara Grunshaw. She's still smarting from her failure to solve the case described in the second Hawthorne adventure: "The Sentence is Death". She blames Anthony for her failure. And now she's out for revenge.

Thrown into prison and brutally interrogated, Anthony is the prime suspect in Throsby's murder and as a second theatre critic is found to have died in mysterious circumstances, the net closes in. Ever more desperate, he realizes that only one man can help him.

But will Hawthorne take the call?

Contracted to write three Hawthorne novels, and all three now either published or planned, Anthony Horowitz rejects the ex policeman's request that he wrote a fourth. He's looking forward to making up his own mysteries, plus he has a play about to open at the Vaudeville, and he wants to savour his connection with the theatre.
But suddenly he needs Hawthorne, the only person who can really help him. Let's hope that a new contract with Penguin will bring a further three Hawthorne and Horowitz stories.

Intriguing, exciting, great writing and equally excellent performance by Tory Kinnear, standing in as Anthony in the narration.enjoy
This is such a fun who-dun-it series, and A Twist of the Knife is also a stand alone. But for readers fortunate enough not yet to have read the first three books, get those too, get reading - and enjoy.

THE TWIST OF A KNIFE

Rory Kinnear has the voices and demeanours of the two main characters perfectly in balance. I enjoyed envisioning them working together on this case, even though they are opposites in many ways.

Clever and believable storytelling

Another enjoyable adventure with Horowitz and Hawthorne. Having been framed for the murder of a theatre critic after a bad review of Anthony's play, Hawthorne comes into his own to save Anthony's skin. As with the previous novel, there is a circle of potential suspects, each with something to hide. This one kept me guessing until the end (in fairness, I don't have the same access to records that Hawthorne does) and the final reveal is worth the wait.
Rory Kinnear's narration is a flawless as ever, can't wait for the next one!

It's not just the knife that twists!
