From the author of Cider With Rosie, Village Christmas is a moving, lyrical portrait of England through the changing years and seasons.

Laurie Lee left his childhood home in the Cotswolds when he was nineteen, but it remained with him throughout his life until, many years later, he returned for good. This collection brings to life the sights, sounds, landscapes and traditions of his home - from centuries-old May Day rituals to his own patch of garden, from carol singing in crunching snow to pub conversations and songs. Here too he writes about the mysteries of love, living in wartime Chelsea, Winston Churchill's wintry funeral and his battle, in old age, to save his beloved Slad Valley from developers.

Told with a warm sense of humour and a powerful sense of history, Village Christmas brings us a picture of a vanished world.

In my 70 years I have read countless books, all of equal strength and weakness, Laurie Lee shines brightly amongst them all, his prose is pure poetry.

This is pure poetry and leaves me with a good mood and a warm feeling. His words remind me of the places where I spent a good deal of my childhood.

Enchanting

As authentic as a jar of scrumpy. If you like to time travel this is your portal through to times gone by.

A portrait from between WW1 & WW2 of English country life.

I loved Cider with Rosie. It was the standout for me when I was at school and I will always be grateful to my English teacher for selecting it. Having recently re-read it, I hoped this would build on that and in the first half it seemed to, but it then spiralled into what appeared to be an aversion to any modern progress or change and that kids “playing out climbing trees” was always the best way (despite the fact that many of them died or became destitute). Lee wrote this some time ago now so would have had a proper hissy fit at the progress made since then. I get that we love to look back to simpler times (our childhood when we had little to no responsibilities) but he seemed to forget the positives that this brings. A shame for me because he does write so well and the narration of this book was very sympathetic to his style. Nice enough but quite forgettable.

Well written but became a bit of a yearning for the “old ways”. Too much looking through Rosie-tinted specs.
