About this listen

Captain William Hawksmoor of the Royal Navy never expected to inherit Kingscastle and is none too pleased when he does so. Especially when he learns that he must marry within a year or be forever dealing with trustees.

As the new marquis of Athelney, the captain takes command of Kingscastle and discovers much to be done to set it in order. He must also contend with his aunt Lady Willoughby Hawksmoor, who is determined that her daughter will be his wife. When she discovers he is far more interested in Eleanor Burgess, her underpaid and much put-upon companion, Lady Willoughby shows she will stop at nothing to keep them apart.

All the characters a bit over the top. Heroes heroic, villains villanous, etc. However quite entertainingly written and beautifully read by Matt Addis.

Good fun

Well written and humorous story which slightly labours the romance at its heart but which is enjoyable and full of interesting detail about the characters, their lives and surroundings. Matt Addis adds value to any book he narrates.

Great performance of an engaging by story

Georgette Heyer style regency romance in a flood, with nautical refrecences. Brilliant narration. Who can ask for more?

Regency romance

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, expertly read by Matt Addis. The detail of the landscape, weather and flood were very vividly depicted and convincing. The plot charming and unexpected in places. A marvellous baddie to hate and some nice naval references. Keep them coming Sophia Holloway. Although set in the regency period the language was not full of contemporary slang but used normal timeless speech patterns. It paid lip service to the period without parody.

Excellent new author

The characters are beautifully drawn and their behaviour typical of the period. The narrator was wonderful.
