About this listen

As he teetered on a narrow rock ledge, a yak's bellow short of the stratosphere, with a rubber mask strapped to his face, a pair of mittens the size of a sea lion's flippers, and a drop of two kilometres below him, it's fair to say Mark Horrell wasn't entirely happy with the situation he found himself in.

He had been an ordinary hiker who had only read books about mountaineering. When he signed up for an organized trek in Nepal with a group of elderly ladies, little did he know that ten years later he would be attempting to climb the world's highest mountain.

But as he traveled across the Himalayas, Andes, Alps, and East Africa, following in the footsteps of the pioneers, he dreamed up a seven-point plan to gain the skills and experience which could turn a wild idea into reality.

Funny, incisive, and heartfelt, his journey provides a refreshingly honest portrait of the joys and torments of a modern-day Everest climber.

The narrator does a great job portraying the authors humour. An inspirational story that made me go for a weekend hill walk

A frank and honest story

I enjoyed this audio book however I do feel it could have been written slightly better. I would have liked more information on the clothing and equipment used on the expeditions. Also I wasn't sure about the extensive use of analogies.

I must add that this is a great story and an incredible achievement. Anyone who has climbed or walked a hill can relate to this book and maybe there's a hidden mountaineer in many of us.

Definitely worth a listen.

was a really well written journey of discovery of the mountains. The writer comes across as a humble, humerous and warm hearted adventurer and I was enthralled the entire way. Slight annoyance with the number of obscure metaphors thrown in but only very slightly. the narrator was decent but I think he needs to remove the constant need to practice his accents, the one with Tenzing Norgay coming across as welsh was hilarious!

Excellent story for the amateur mountain lover

Another narrator who thinks they have to do the accents if the people involved - sometimes borderline offensive, sometimes not doing them, all over the place. Sigh.

Accents!!
