Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

1686, Iceland. An isolated, windswept land haunted by witch trials and steeped in the ancient sagas.

Betrothed unexpectedly to Jón Eiríksson, Rósa is sent to join her new husband in the remote village of Stykkishólmur. Here, the villagers are wary of outsiders.

But Rósa harbours her own suspicions. Her husband buried his first wife alone in the dead of night. He will not talk of it. Instead he gives her a small glass figurine. She does not know what it signifies.

The villagers mistrust them both. Dark threats are whispered. There is an evil here - Rósa can feel it. Is it her husband, the villagers - or the land itself?

Alone and far from home, Rósa sees the darkness coming. She fears she will be its next victim...

Well worth a listen/read

Excellently performed - it was good to hear the names pronounced by a native speaker. Others have criticised the book as being a predictable read - i disagree. I can see where some may say its a variation on Rebecca which it may well be but is none the worse for it if thats the case - i always thought Rebecca was a variation on a theme of Jane Eyre. I enjoyed it for what it was, a well written story and, had I've been reading the book, i would also take issue with those who say that its not a page turner. It kept my attention and thats not an easy task where fiction is concerned.

More misery than joy

Excellent performances but the story is more misery than joy and the people strangely savage, humourless and inhumane.

Nordic saga

A story that could be linked to myth. Set against the unforgiving Medieval Icelandic landscape. A place of superstition and gossip and un forgiveness

Loved this book

Would definitely recommend . Real depth of characterisation. Kept wanting to know more about each one. Demonstrated well the complexity and layers that form individual choices and experience

Not the worst story, narration excellent!

There was something missing for me, can't put my finger on it at the moment..but the setting made up for it, fascinating.

Nice but...

I think this would have been better as a short story. It's atmospheric and nicely described but I struggled to finish it. I kept listening to it just because I wanted to see when is something going to happen. It went so long at the beginning with some details that weren't intrigue and I felt like the last chapters where in a rush. I felt like there was only one plot which could have had less chapters to reach it.

Atmospheric, vivid, skillfully narrated!

The Glass Woman is an imaginatively plotted, immersive and well-researched novel. Caroline Lea conjures the harsh yet starkly beautiful landscape of 17th century Iceland so that it not only permeates the actions and emotions of her characters, it emerges as equally strong and unforgettable in its own right.
