About this listen
Colonel James Raytak is about to die. The 93-year-old combat veteran is living his last days in a nursing home; his only hope for survival is an experimental Medpod life support system controlled by an artificial intelligence.
Co-developed by the world’s largest gaming company, Qualitranos the AI will also control the soon-to-be-released game Limitless Lands. Without its creator’s knowledge, the AI decides the best course of treatment is to import its patient’s consciousness directly into the game.
Colonel Raytak must dust off his military training and lead his virtual troops in a fight to repair his broken body and mind while exploring the Limitless Lands.

I never read any litRPG before and thus jumped at the opportunity to get this audio book. I like DIE (by Kieron Gillen) and the Assassin Creed games outside of the meta plot, so I thought I might enjoy this. Sadly, I did not.
The book focuses mostly on the meta games rules of the Limitless Lands game and how the main character plays the game, from buffs to interactions with trolls (the player kind, not the monster kind). There is character creation, PvP arena duels, and equipment upgrades, and minmaxing. The world itself is by design a "classic fantasy one" with a solid Roman Empire feel to it and a classical array of orcs, goblins, spiders, etc… It is mostly set up to allow "high adventure" to take place. This is where the book lost me: these are the things I enjoy least from the computer RPG genre. Your mileage might vary, you if you enjoy those aspects, then the book should be right for you.
While I do not like either soccer or opera, I am able to judge what is a good performance and what is not. This is a good book and I genuinely believe you should give it a go. The main character's class (Commander, think RTS more than RPG) is a great idea. It allows for more tactical decisions, getting right into unit fighting (the real strong point of the Roman Army), and gives the plot a direction since "you cannot ignore quests given by your faction leaders". The RTS mixed within an RPG is really interesting and should make for fun progression of the character and story. The cyberpunk meta plot is what hooked me the most and I would love to see it expended. The characters are great and most of the NPCs are more likeable than the real players in the game.
The production value of the audio book is spectacular. It flirts with being a radio play with sound effects and added effects to Jack Voraces' voice. He does a great job of making the characters come to live and his performance is great all the way through, making me feel for the main's character (first person point of view) struggles both in and out of the game world.
Finally, I would like to thank Jack Voraces for giving me the opportunity of reading the book.
My first forey into litRPG.
