About this listen

The country is in turmoil. With the capital city occupied, half a million refugees are on the march, looking for safety on the frontier, accompanied by Lady Flint's soldiers. But escaping war is never easy, and soon the battle may find them, whether they are prepared or not.

Back in the capital, Michel Bravis smuggles even more refugees out of the city. But internal forces are working against him. With enemies on all sides, Michael may be forced to find help with the very occupiers he's trying to undermine.

Meanwhile, Ben Styke is building his own army. He and his mad lancers are gathering every able body they can find and searching for an ancient artifact that may have the power to turn the tides of war in their favor. But what they find may not be what they're looking for.

Magic and gunpowder collide in Wrath of Empire, the explosive second novel in the Gods of Blood and Powder series.

With Landfall now occupied; millions of refugees on the road; Lady Flint and Ben Styke on their own missions, the stage has now been set and the plotting and action comes fast and furiously.

I look forward to the last book.

Brian McClellan has set a bar so high with his previous novels, that I was a touch nervous whether this next book in the sequel will keep me interested. One more time he showed that the long wait for this second book in the series was worth it. You do need to read previous book to make the sense out of the events.

The author takes us back to the Powder Mage world, which is both explosive and fantastic. He further develops layers of complex political intrigue indespersed with events full of action and leaves you flipping the pages with glee abandon.

Yet again, the characters are well-developed and he slowly reveals more details about their personalities, past and motives. Ben Stykes, Vlora Flint and Michel Brevis will keep you entertained and their story arcs won’t disappoint.

All of this is set on the military field making you think that it’s just a ‘big dance of gunpowder’ until the big finale and the magic arrives...
If you’re into well built fantasy worlds and enjoy loosing yourself in the story, then this sequel is for you.

Christian Rodska has grown on me as a narrator. His rough voice wonderfully describes the fast paced events and his ability to give characters their own voices keeps things more interesting.

I very much look forward to the next book in the series and have a feeling it will be worth it...

Mr McClellan ‘STYKEs’ again. Brilliant!
