A Book of the Decade, 2010-2020 (Independent).

Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals.

As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education and the price she had to pay for it.

This had me gripped from the beginning. Beautifully written. It's devastating and uplifting. Heart stopping and heart warming. One of the best books I've ready in a long time. Inspiring all the way.

This book was recommended to me by a client and I will thank her for it. I found some interesting parallels with my own religious upbringing but also am in awe of the desire some of these children had to educate themselves.

I loved this book and am inspired by this incredible story and also sad for what the author has lost to religion, conspiracy thinking and bi-polar disorder. I hope she is now surrounded with love and support.

What an incredible and empowering story
