About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged audiobook edition of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, read by Indira Varma.

'I've stolen a garden,' she said very fast. 'It isn't mine. It isn't anybody's. Nobody wants it, nobody cares for it, nobody ever goes into it. Perhaps everything is dead in it already; I don't know.'

After losing her parents, young Mary Lennox is sent from India to live in her uncle's gloomy mansion on the wild English moors. She is lonely and has no one to play with, but one day she learns of a secret garden somewhere in the grounds that no one is allowed to enter. Then Mary uncovers an old key in a flowerbed - and a gust of magic leads her to the hidden door. Slowly she turns the key and enters a world she could never have imagined.

One of my favourite childhood stories, and I try to re- read it often. As the book says, it fills my head with Agreeable things. Wonderful reading, acting, character voices.

Definitely the book and not audible account. When I try and pause it it sometimes doesn't work and then jumps back instead of pausing up to where I listened to. I've had other books downloaded and listened to and it's not done this. Stories good but think this document is faulty

Keeps halting and forgetting where I listened to.

Indira Varma is a gifted narrator! I knew this story from childhood, but had never read the book. For anyone wondering whether it’s worth the time to understand the full story… yes! There are a million fascinating details in this book. And, the messages of nature as healing are truly moving.

Surprised by how much I loved this!

A lovely story told absolutely wonderfully by Indira, who I do know from tv - I will look out her other work on here because she really brought this book to life.

Wonderful narration
