About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of A Woman's Work, written and read by Harriet Harman.

The first time the story of women's progressive politics over the past thirty years has been told - by someone at the forefront of the movement

Why does the political representation of women matter? And which hurdles - personal, political and societal - have been faced, fought and sometimes overcome in the past thirty years? From campaigning with small children to increasing the number of women in Parliament, bringing women's issues to the heart of the Labour Party and tackling a parliamentary culture with no consideration for family life, this frank, inspiring and politically charged book is a crucial account of the progress (and occasional setbacks) made in fighting to change the Labour Party, UK politics and the way the country has been governed since the 1970s.

Critic reviews

A personal memoir but also the story of women in politics and public life. Since Harriet entered parliament in 1982 pregnant with her first child she has seen the number of women MPs increase to more than 200. Many of us are there because of her (Rachel Reeves, 'Books of the Year')
A Woman's Work is a fantastic and inspiring read which I would recommend to anyone interested in overcoming prejudice and promoting fairness. Over her 35 year career in Parliament no-one has fought harder or more effectively for gender equality than Harriet Harman. She is an outstanding role model (John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons)

I thoroughly enjoyed this lively, passionate and honest autobiography. It was particularly brilliantly narrated by the author which made it even more engaging. I learnt such a lot about the way society has changed and how things we take for granted today were made possible. It was very refreshing to hear the facts behind the headlines.

Remarkable book by a remarkable woman

This book is an honest and thoughtful account of the progress of the women's movement over the last 30 years, brilliantly told from the perspective of a woman who was at the heart of it.
It's a good reminder of how far women have come in the quest for genuine equality, but that there is still a long way to go.
The book made me reflect on how inequality influenced my decisions and the impact that had on my career, motherhood and self-esteem.
I'd like to thank Harriet and all the women who supported her to achieve what she has and I'd also like to thank her for putting it on record in this book.

An honest review of a feminists political journey.

A really well written book and kudos to Harriet for narrating it herself. I have been vaguely aware of Harriet Harman in politics and had certainly been aware she had stepped up to lead the Labour Party twice in the face of general election defeats when Leaders had ‘abandoned ship’ having failed to win. That said, I had no real understanding of the work she, and many other women, had done to improve the lives of women and minorities in this country. A fabulous account of the shifting times of the last 40 years and the fortunes of the women who lived in them.

If you’re one of those men claiming to be a feminist, you should read this to understand what that really looks like. If you’re a woman, you should read this so that you know, while there’s still much work to do, this amazing woman, with her impressive determination, resilience and tenacity, is one of the reasons your life is much better now than it would have been 20 or even 10 years ago.

A real revelation about Politics and the Women’s Movement
