About this listen

THE INTERNATIONAL SENSATION

It starts with just one body – tortured, mummified and then discarded.

Its discovery reveals a nightmare world of hidden lives. Of lost identities, secret rituals and brutal exploitation, where nobody can be trusted.

This is the darkest, most complex case the police have ever seen.

This is the world of the Crow Girl.

Critic reviews

Compelling... we are left gasping for breath
A compulsive page-turner... ridiculously entertaining
There's a fantastic twist... the pace of its revelations [is] relentless
Dark, powerful, disturbing
The best crime novel of the year so far
A breakneck journey through a plot of labyrinthine complexity... Sund boldly places dissociative identity disorder…at the heart of this extremely disturbing novel. (Joan Smith)
A dark and brutal read that addresses violence perpetuated by women. Snappy writing makes this a page-turning thriller
Creepy is elevated to an art form in this tale of dysfunctional characters, peppered with paedophilia, guilt, pain, powerlessness, denial and betrayal... The subject matter makes for harrowing reading at times, but skilfully escalating suspense keeps you hooked all the way
A pulse-pounding thriller that manages to linger on character depth and puts an emphasis on supporting characters that are usually given short shrift. With its heady mix of graphic violence, noirish thrills and social commentary, the book is a must-read for Scandinavian crime fiction enthusiasts….a huge book and a landmark achievement
Tipped to make a killing

I almost didn't buy this title based on the disturbing subject matter and the length of the book.

The subject matter while disturbing in general is very well handled by this author in my opinion. It's there not in your face with unnecessary graphic detail but I felt it was more as background for a clever, intriguing and well woven story. Every time I "just knew" where it was going it took a path I hadn't thought of and for me that's a good book.

Moral challenges are abundant in our world, the opportunity is recognising them and staying true.

Mankind's challenge is to protect our children. Crow Girl reminds us how prevalent it is that people want to control, dominate and humiliate others, particularly children. Such a stark reminder.

The characters and plot unravels like an onion leaving the bitter core till last. Well told.

Epic

This is very hard work. Confusing and depressing. Incredibly long and I wish I had tackled The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire instead. Yv

What made the experience of listening to The Crow Girl the most enjoyable?

I have given top stars for this as I can clearly hear it is well written, however I found it deeply upsetting and could not complete it. Graphic details that made it highly uncomfortable. Just be warned that there are upsetting details connected to children.

Hard listen that I couldn't complete

Pretty nasty stuff, but there's a note or two of hope. A bit too much head-hopping between chapters though. I often lost track of who the POV character was. Still, worth the listen.

Harrowing story of abuse & depravity
