About this listen

Introducing Luke Carlton - ex-Special Boat Service commando, and now under contract to MI6 for some of its most dangerous missions.

Sent into the steaming Colombian jungle to investigate the murder of a British intelligence officer, Luke finds himself caught up in the coils of a plot that has terrifying international dimensions. Hunted down, captured, tortured and on the run from one of South America's most powerful and ruthless drugs cartels and its psychotic leader thirsting for revenge, Luke is in a life-or-death race against time to prevent a disaster on a truly terrifying scale: London is the target, the weapon is diabolical and the means of delivery is ingenious.

Critic reviews

Full of tomorrow’s headlines, Crisis is a nerve-shredding thriller with an intimate knowledge of the world it portrays. This is intelligent, high-voltage story-telling of the very highest order. (TONY PARSONS)
Written by someone who has been there, done that and knows what it’s about, Crisis is a thriller you just can’t put down. (Sir ROGER MOORE)
Gardner knows his subject – and it shows. A rattling good read. (JOHN HUMPHRYS, BBC Broadcaster)

Follows the path pioneered by Frederick Forsyth . . . authenticity seeps from every page . . . this is a promising start.
Impressive . . .Gardner's debut begins at speed and scarcely draws breath thereafter.
Few thriller debuts possess the confidence and verve of Frank Gardner's CRISIS . . . a book of exhilarating panache.

Where does Crisis rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The story is good when you get into it. However, the reader although good with character voices is not at all good with the main reading. Honestly, he really needs to stop being so breathy, short and sharp and be more flowing. I found myself laughing at some of the reading.

What other book might you compare Crisis to, and why?

I suppose you could liken it to Fredrick Forsyth, not as good by a long way, but this was a debut novel and I am sure he will get into his stride.

Would you listen to another book narrated by John Sackville?

No

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not moved but certainly had me listening for more was the part leading up to the planting of the destructive device.

Any additional comments?

A good book and I would listen to more by Frank Gardner, but not with John Sackville reading it.

Couldn't put this down - a gripping and fast paced story and totally believable! Should be made into a film or TV series... Well done Frank Gardner - you are in the wrong job...

The new John Le Carre for the modern age!

I wanted to enjoy this more than I did as I very much respect Frank Gardner both as a journalist and a lobbyist. Despite the good storyline, it wasn’t terribly well written (full of literary clichés and unnecessary product detail) but I’m sure that will improve with the more fiction he writes. What really let the audible experience down was the narration. So much so that I nearly abandoned listening to it on several occasions. It was full of breathy inflexion and “dramatic” pauses to such extent you could see/hear them coming. Dreadful. I will definitely listen to the sequel if the narrator is changed, otherwise I’ll read it instead.

Good story, not very well written and appallingly narrated

Exciting

Excellent story spoiled by a poor narrator. I found John Sackville's voice didn't fit the story.

I really liked the story and will listen to another of Frank Gardener's books so long as he picks a different narrator.

Excellent story spoiled by a poor narrator.
