Ken Follett wurde am 5. Juni 1949 in Cardiff, Wales geboren. Die streng religiösen Eltern erlaubten ihren Kindern weder Fernsehen noch Radio, und so lernte Follett schon früh lesen und vertiefte sich in die Geschichten und Erzählungen seiner Mutter. Er studierte Philosophie am University College London. 1978 wurde sein Roman "Die Nadel" veröffentlicht, der Follett zum Bestseller-Autor machte. In den folgenden Jahren verfasste Ken Follett weitere Romane und übernahm nebenbei auch soziale Aufgaben in verschiedenen Vereinen und Verbänden.
