About this listen

When Queenie Hennessy discovers that Harold Fry is walking the length of England to save her, and all she has to do is wait, she is shocked. Her note had explained she was dying. How can she wait? A new volunteer at the hospice suggests that Queenie should write again; only this time she must tell Harold everything. In confessing to secrets she has hidden for 20 years, she will find atonement for the past. As the volunteer points out, ‘Even though you’ve done your travelling, you’re starting a new journey, too.’

Queenie thought her first letter would be the end of the story. She was wrong. It was the beginning.Told in simple, emotionally-honest prose, with a mischievous bite, this is a novel about the journey we all must take to learn who we are; it is about loving and letting go. And most of all it is about finding joy in unexpected places and at times we least expect.

Emotional without being mawkish, real and yet poetic. Superbly performed and written. If you enjoyed The Pilgrimage you will love this just as much.

Wonderful

This is a moving, sad story about dying. For fans of Last Pilgrimage, it is a "companion" book that tells the other side of the story. Best to read shortly after the first book - some of the details were rather hazy for me which lessens the smiling at recollected events. Queenie's character is very well drawn and beautifully narrated by Celia Imrie. The descriptions of places, people and emotions are very vivid. I think this is probably the best book of the 3 I have read by Rachel Joyce - I liked Harold Fry but this book has more depth of feeling and characterisation.

Moving sequel to the Last Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Chose this because I loved The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry' and did enjoy it. The narration was good and worked really well and it was a cleaver idea to write the 'other half' of Harold's story but I didn't feel like it quite hot those heights.

Still enjoyed this but not as good as Harold Fry

I read The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry about a year ago and was gripped. Jim Broadbent’s performance brought Harold to life, with such truth that it was hard to put down. It got to Cornwall and back in no time at all.
Now The love song of Miss Queenie Hennessy has been the perfect reply to Harold. Celia Imrie is so honest and light and made Queenie a wonderful person to get to know. I could smell the sea garden, see all the patients and nurses. She triumphed with Finty, mr Henderson and the pearly king. Sister Mary Was who would love to be. The writing was faultless. It tripped and flowed tile a the cool waters of a brook.
I listened to this on a holiday I took alone. Queenie and all the characters have encouraged me to take more holidays alone and be truly absorbed!
Wonderful work!!!

Totally absorbing!

Moving, uplifting, compelling. I read this after listening to the Audible version of Harold Frye by the same author and this really adds a great deal to that book too. Read by Celia Imrie whose delivery and performance are perfectly matched to
the character. When I first heard her, I thought 'of course, that IS Queenie Hennessy'. Just sublime.
A great structure to this book- the cast of extras in the Hospice and a little twist at the end which I did see coming, but still enjoyed. I've spent far too long sat on my driveway or outside shops because I want to listen to the next bit but my journey has ended!
I tend to shy away from anything with a sad theme or about death, dying or hospices. Probably because I fear it more than anything else. I fear grief and losing those close to me. Recently the work that hospices do was brought close to home when a friend's husband died very very prematurely. I heard about the wonderful hospice he spent his final days at and perhaps that made a little chink in my armour and allowed me to listen to this. Moving, but also FUNNY whilst tackling the big topics of life, death, love, suicide and mental health. All very prescient in the curent climate. I heartily recommend this book to anyone.

Fabulous
