About this listen

The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Pop Goes The Weasel - the furiously fast-paced new thriller from M J Arlidge, read by Elizabeth Bower.

The body of a middle-aged man is discovered in Southampton's red light district - horrifically mutilated, with his heart removed.

Hours later - and barely cold - the heart arrives with his wife and children by courier.

A pattern emerges when another male victim is found dead and eviscerated, his heart delivered soon afterwards.

The media call it Jack the Ripper in reverse; revenge against the men who lead sordid double lives visiting prostitutes. For Grace, only one thing is certain: there's a vicious serial-killer at large who must be halted at all costs . . .

Critic reviews

This is going to be as big as Jo Nesbo (Judy Finnigan)
Taut, fast-paced, truly excellent
DI Helen Grace is a genuinely fresh heroine ... Arlidge weaves together a tapestry that chills to the bone
M. J. Arlidge has created a genuinely fresh heroine in DI Helen Grace
Chilling stuff
A chilling read
A grisly, gripping thriller
Gruesomely realistic, intriguing and relentless. Arlidge's fledgling army of fans is about to grow
What a great premise!...EENY MEENY is a fresh and brilliant departure from the stock serial killer tale. And Detective Inspector Helen Grace is one of the greatest heroes to come along in years (Jeffery Deaver, New York Times bestselling author of The Skin Collector and Solitude Creek)
A fast-paced, twisting police procedural and thriller that's sure to become another bestseller

struggled to finish this - found it to be predictable and actually a little cringe worthy. would try another book by same author though.

too linear

I enjoyed all the twists and turns in this book right up to the very end.
If you're the type of person that usually knows the killer half way through, I think you'd be surprised with this one.
Elizabeth Bowers delivery was one of the things that made this book for me. She has such a easy voice to listen to & her accents were on point (in my opinion).
Another great book from MJ Arlidge.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I didn't resent listening to it but I can't say I rushed through it. The story is a pretty good one, lot's of twists and turns and a satisfying ending. However not one of the characters was particularly likable and Helen Grace comes across as a bit of an idiot. The other problem is that one is left with the impression that men are second class citizens and have very little to do with significant events in Southampton. I'm all for girl power but it comes across as a tad unrealistic.

What about Elizabeth Bower’s performance did you like?

The performance was very good. She brought the characters to life and really put some emotion into the story.

Do you think Pop Goes the Weasel needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

If I have a spare credit, decide that that there is an overabundance of happiness in my life, and I have been neglecting the feminists of Hampshire, I will certainly listen to the next book. However I know that as soon as I do I'll probably regret it as Helen Grace will inevitably slowly destroy her life for no good reason and more unlikeable people will do more unappealing things to more unlikeable people.

Any additional comments?

A good story with a great narrator but unfortunately the whole is less than the sum of it's parts. It's worth a listen Just don't expect it to fill your heart with joy and your mind with whimsy.

GRIM with few likeable characters
