book was good (not as good as murderbot) but overall experience really marred by narrative style. some out right mistakes in pronunciation and a plodding expressionless delivery . very poor.

I liked the book because it has a great description of another world. I enjoyed the world building 🙂

Martha Wells lays out a vivid tapestry of a world, with rich descriptions of a city, the landscape and the different peoples. Then she weaves in an intriguing system of magic and spirits, letting the reader gradually uncover the logic for themselves, without spending paragraphs explaining all the background.

A strong and unusual warrior-priest character is centre stage, and the plot unfolds with danger and surprise. All the actions seem plausible for the competing characters, yet this is far from being a predictable fantasy plot line.

Great writing, and the audio performance is pretty good, you feel the actor wants to share this story with you.

Highly recommend this!

Vivid worlds, unusual storyline

Took a while to get into the flow of this, and a long build towards a fairly rapid denouement. Also a LOT of world building detail to take in. But a good narrator who shaped some believable characters and pleasant enough. Much preferred City of Bones in Wells’ early standalone work.
