About this listen

A clone has been the victim of a savage killing. The investigation may uncover a threat to humanity's very existence. Great North Road is a standalone adventure from science fiction star Peter F. Hamilton, the author of The Night's Dawn trilogy.

For fans of Philip K. Dick and Kim Stanley Robinson.

In Newcastle, AD 2142, Detective Sidney Hurst attends a brutal murder scene. The victim is one of the wealthy North family’s clones, but the most disturbing aspect is how he died. Twenty years ago, a North clone billionaire and his household were slaughtered in the exact same manner, on the tropical planet of St Libra. The only member of the household left alive, Angela Tramelo, received the blame. Was Angela wrongly convicted back then? She’d never wavered under interrogation – claiming she alone survived an alien attack.

With St Libran bio-fuel now powering Earth's economy, investigating this alien threat becomes top priority. A vast expedition is mounted via the planet’s Newcastle gateway – including Angela Tramelo, grudgingly released from prison. But the expedition is cut off, deep within St Libra's rainforests. Then the bloodshed begins . . .

I view Peter F Hamilton as very much pulp fiction: I don't expect much from him except lots of action and pages. Great North Road still isn't on the same level as anything by Iain M Banks, but it's by far the best he's written and a good step up from his other books. The world he has created is intricate and nuanced, and the story explores it thoroughly. There are a couple of weak sub-stories (I felt the expedition was insufficiently justified and not entirely believable), but mostly top notch. Enjoy!

The best Peter F Hamilton I've read

A very good stand alone Sci fi epic. Plausible through out. I loved it. Satisfying and rich. Left me wanting to hear more.

The long and winding road.

some bits perhaps too long. overall good mix of crime and sci. back story makes you feel attached to the characters. the last few hours were gripping, but a very slow build

nice idea for someone who knows Newcastle

Two compelling stories run parallel on two different planets, a murder investigation and an expedition to the unknown. There's a feel of strong realism to the struggles and emotions of the characters thanks to the relatable personalities and very rational stories (sometimes it feels like every scene and eventuality is taken to its logical conclusion). For such a long book, impressively it had no unnecessary scenes and no explanations of the science and tech of the world. Still on the heavy side though.

A vast story experienced at a human scale

Not as good as Pandora’s Star, but a good listen all the same. Toby is a much better narrator than John, hopefully we get more Hamilton books read by Toby.

Enjoyable PFH novel. Well read.
