About this listen

 Fang Rock Lighthouse stands somewhere off the South Coast of England in the early 1900s. Its three keepers have lately noticed a strange fog, and one has seen an eerie light in the water. Soon one of them is dead, and Old Reuben believes that legend is about to become reality... When the Doctor and Leela arrive, they become involved in a frightening fight for survival. A shipwreck brings four others in search of shelter, but nobody's safety can be guaranteed on Fang Rock that night. With the lighthouse under attack, one by one the humans are picked off. The soundtrack is sometimes better than the television. For example - the memory of the Rutan climbing the life house can only be improved with added imagination and several decades distance.

As a young boy when this aired on tv, i was gripped by this adventure, and till this day remains a firm favorite

Fang Rock is on similar terrain to the excellent The Brain of Morbius - at least insofar as they’re both playing with the horror genre. For my money, this is less successful than Morbius by some margin. That said, my hunch is that it would have been better to listen to the novel (also narrated by the superb Louise Jameson) rather than this blend of narration and original audio. The story is a mix of a lighthouse suspense/horror and a kind of Victorian drama playing out in the background involving shipwreck survivors. There’s a nasty alien monster. It was great to hear Tom Baker, the best Doctor. But I wasn't 100 per cent sure what had happened at the end, though of course the Doctor wins. I haven’t seen the original episode, which didn’t help. Overall, this felt very much like a kind of poor compromise - bits of the original story, first aired in 1977, with narration which is little more than stage instructions or the screenplay equivalent read aloud. For big fans of the show, this is required listening. My plan is to listen to the novel adaptation. But I’m not sure the story is one of the best. A highlight is Jameson, who played Leela, chatting about the show in an interview which is included with this title. Interestingly, she says she didn’t really rate Fang Rock either … it’s far from her favourite adventure. But it remains popular with many fans.
