About this listen

Six million years ago, at the very dawn of the starfaring era, Abigail Gentian fractured herself into a thousand male and female clones: the shatterlings. Sent out into the galaxy, these shatterlings have stood aloof as they document the rise and fall of countless human empires. They meet every 200,000 years to exchange news and memories of their travels with their siblings.

Not only are Campion and Purslane late for their 30-second reunion but they have also brought along an amnesiac golden robot for a guest. But the wayward shatterlings get more than the scolding they expect: they face the discovery that someone has a very serious grudge against the Gentian line, and there is a very real possibility of traitors in their midst. The surviving shatterlings have to dodge exotic weapons while they regroup to try to solve the mystery of who is persecuting them and why---before their ancient line is wiped out of existence forever.

An epic story woven with many threads. Wonderful use of language. I thoroughly recommend it.

A great listen.

I love the way, there are multiple stories that that seemingly have no connection in the beginning, but slowly gives hints towards future events, merging throughout the story, it keeps me guessing and thinking during this convergence of the storylines towards concluding, but still open conclusion, the style of writing is way, more thought, provoking, and creates lots more speculation and wonder during the read than a linear storytelling style, I love it

One of the best books I’ve read

I really enjoyed this book. It’s not as dark as some of his sci-fi and that suited me well at this moment in time. There is intrigue and excitement at multiple points throughout the book, but not unnecessary plot twists for their own sake. Every action it thought out and discussed by characters, rather than rushing through plot points. The pace was perfect for me and I really didn’t want it to end.

Loved the classic sci-fi feel of the book. A chance to explore human characters all set to light years and spending thousands of years in stasis and all kinds of sci-fi classic tropes.
I suspect the narrator improved the book for me because his reading made all the characters feel really distinct.

Solid sci-fi story

Perhaps Reynolds best most creative work. Looking very very far into a possible future. More fantastic than usual. But a few toes left touching ground (ie science.)

Deep time
