About this listen

Sir John Betjeman was one of the best-known and loved Poet Laureates. Even after his death, his popularity continues to garner acclaim and new admirers. Fortunately, he left behind a legacy of poetry readings and performances in the BBC archives that can be enjoyed in this comprehensive collection. Selected from over thirty years of radio and television programmes, this compilation includes the very best of his performances and the most popular of his poems, among them 'Metro-land'; 'A Subaltern’s Lovesong'; 'Diary of a Church Mouse'; 'In a Bath Teashop'; 'Pot Pourri from a Surrey Garden'; 'Youth and Age on Beaulieu River'; 'Trebetherick'; 'Myfanwy at Oxford'; 'Back from Australia' and 'Death at Leamington'.©2008 BBC Audiobooks Ltd; (P)1994 BBC Audiobooks Ltd Poetry

This is proper poetry from a master poet. Not like the modern rubbish which neither rhymes nor scans.

Any additional comments?

The voice of dear John Betjeman is the best way to enjoy his wonderful words. Particularly enjoyable are the little comments and thoughts between the poems. A real delight.

Sublime Betjeman

Sir John Betjeman is a groundbreaking and inspiring pioneer.

It is more better and more profound, that with his work, it is more easier to hear the sound of his voice, while listening to him.

To me, he is a walking institution or a locomotive, rushing forth, applying commentary with lyrical and poetic realities, regarding our lives, our livelihoods and pleasantries.

This is definitely a work worth listening to, timelessly.

This work never gets old and it never dies.
