About this listen

The inside of Derren Brown's head is a strange and mysterious place. Now you can climb inside and wander around. Find out just how Derren's mind works, see what motivates him and discover what made him the weird and wonderful person he is today.

Obsessed with magic and illusions since childhood, Derren's life to date has been an extraordinary journey and here, in Confessions of a Conjuror, he allows us all to join him on a magical mystery tour - to the centre of his brain... Taking as his starting point the various stages of a conjuring trick he's performing in a crowded restaurant, Derren's endlessly engaging narrative wanders through subjects from all points of the compass, from the history of magic and the fundamentals of psychology to the joys of internet shopping and the proper use of Parmesan cheese.

Brilliant, hilarious and entirely unlike anything else you have ever read before, Confessions of a Conjuror is a complete and utter joy.

I'm unsure how to describe this book, it isn't a biography really, and i think some people have been unfair in some reviews because of this. But I still find it fascinating and very well written, if a little disjointed, but I find this unstructured style charming, it jumps from subject to subject, just like a stream of conscious (abit beckett). It's funny, has interesting stories and some good advice throw in. Worth a listen too.

I haven't finished this book yet but I love it. Like the films and books I enjoy it doesn't move in a predictable straight line but uses the device of a card trick, performed in a Bristol restaurant, as the central thread from which to launch off at various tangents. It is candid and self-deprecating but intelligently written and well read by Derren himself. It has often made me laugh out loud and has delivered some very well thought out, rational opinions on life. What it doesn't give is the story of a career but then I neither wanted nor expected that.

Would you listen to Confessions of a Conjuror again? Why?

It's an interesting insight into Derren's way of doing things and is entertaining so yes, after a while I could see myself coming back to it.

What did you like best about this story?

His powers of description are really very good. Additionally he uses humour well and is not afraid to be self-deprecating.

What does Derren Brown bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Hearing him telling his own story clearly adds an authenticity to it.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Then I woke up. Then I died.

Any additional comments?

This is not a 'how to' for all of his performances; nonetheless, fans of Derren Brown will enjoy the audiobook I'm sure.

An interesting 'light' listen

I have had this book in hardback for a number of years and tried a few times to get into reading it sadly I never got very far. Purchasing it audible has been fantastic the extra excitement that derren gives to the book when reading is fun and enjoyable to listen to. A really good story with quite a nice spin on how to see into derren s mind set as a night doing tricks in a restaurant and following his brain flow as the night progresses to see other parts of his life.

Excellent and well read
