About this listen

In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. Now, in The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics–a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the “endless clash of armies” we see in Congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of “our improbable experiment in democracy.” He also writes, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment.
At the heart of this audiobook is Senator Obama’s vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. Underlying his stories about family, friends, members of the Senate, and even the president is a vigorous search for connection: the foundation for a radically hopeful political consensus.
A senator and a lawyer, a professor and a father, a Christian and a skeptic, and above all a student of history and human nature, Senator Obama has written a book of transforming power.©2006 Barack Obama; (P)2006 Random House, Inc. Random House Audio, a division of Random House, Inc.

A truly beautiful performance that brought tears to my eyes more than once. As eloquent as you would expect.

Human and somehow awesome at once.

Fantastic book. A must read for any fan of Obama's, and also for those wanting a reminder of how American politics, while always contentious, was not always insane.

Superb

From this, you can see, quite easily, why Barack came out of nowhere and went on to win the presidency twice.

This book is great in that it gives you an insight into the mind of someone that perhaps understands people better than anyone. I've read endlessly about the merits of different policies from hundreds of authors, and the economic and social problems we face, and while this book no doubt touches on that, showing that Obama has a greater knowledge of the issues and solutions than seemingly most politicians, but what's more interesting is how he talks about their impacts on people and how he sympathises with virtually anyone's viewpoint so well. Unlike most people today, he doesn't just push for his side, but sees their impact from the other side's point of view too, and tries to address their concerns in a really moderate and thoughtful way, and the struggles of a person like this in today's horribly partisan political environment.

Worth a listen, not only because it is short and sweet and read by Obama himself, but because it might just inspire you to treat all people, regardless of viewpoint, with a bit more respect and courtesy as Obama seems to do so effortlessly.

Inspiring

Beautifully written. Offers outstanding insight into the challenges of public office and the need to balance the needs of all people, rich, poor and less able, with the individual home pressures of family - partnership and parenthood. Not easy at first, but finds a tone that quickly becomes informative and inspirational.
