About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A hilarious autobiography from one of Britain's funniest and most successful comedians.

Born Chris Collins in 1957, Frank Skinner he grew up in the West Midlands where he inherited his father's passion for football - and alcohol.

Expelled from school at 16, Frank had been nurturing a serious drink problem from the age of 14, but managed to go teetotal in 1987.

Along with personal revelations, it helped turn his life around. His first television appearance in 1988 was met with raucous laughter from the audience - and 131 complaints, including one from cabinet minister Edwina Currie.

He met fellow comedian David Baddiel in 1990, and the two went on to share a flat throughout the early 90s and to create the hit TV series Fantasy Football League. Winner of the prestigious Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival, Skinner's comedy is a groundbreaking mix of laddish and philosophical humour, one which has helped shape the British comedy scene ever since.

From The Frank Skinner Show to co-writing the football's-coming-home classic Three Lions, his career has never been boring. Here, for the first time, Frank candidly tells us of the highs and lows of his fascinating life.

Critic reviews

Skinner tells this amazing story in a rapid and murky manner
A rattling good read, written with humour and honesty
Skinner has a pathological need to tell the truth and that can only be to the advantage of any autobiography
'I laughed so much - I fell off my chair'

it's nice when they read their own biography. And I find Frank has away of speaking to you where it almost feels like you've come home day sat yourself on the sofa with Frank next to you and he starts by ' you wouldn't believe what happend to me ...

Really enjoyed it, Frank is a real down - to-earth bloke with great wit. It's a shame it wasn't longer, - which he might have heard a few times.

Monologues of a very funny man

I'd agree with the review from The Guardian - it's the early years, before he became famous, that are of the most interest here. His heavy drinking in seventies Birmingham are portrayed honestly and unflinchingly, with the feeling coming through that for all its seeming drudgery, he was happiest then. Once he becomes famous I became less interested and felt that the 'Three Lions' story went on a bit. They didn't win, Frank, get over it. I look forward to the next installment because, from what is written here, Skinner still has a lot to say about fame and coming to terms with it, and maybe he'll do this once his star begins to diminish a bit.

A Life Like Frank's

Really enjoyed this and got to know the man behind the name a little more. However, his modesty, which he refers to, and endeavors to not bore his audience has meant he has sold us short. I truly enjoyed listening to this but there simply wasn't enough of it! Massive gaps and lack of more information left me feeling short changed. Still very much worth buying, there are laugh out load stories in there, and a real feeling of truth. Well done Frank.

Loved it but …..
