About this listen

The novels of Iain M. Banks have forever changed the face of modern science fiction. His Culture books combine breathtaking imagination with exceptional storytelling, and have secured his reputation as one of the most extraordinary and influential writers in the genre.

'Banks is a phenomenon' William Gibson

War rages across the galaxy. Billions have died, billions more are doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, face cold-blooded, brutal destruction. The Idirans fight for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles are at stake. There can be no surrender.

Within this cosmic conflict, a crucial battle of wits is waged. Deep within a fabled labyrinth, on a Planet of the Dead forbidden to mortals, lies a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans desperately seek it. It is the fate of Horza, the Changer, and his motley crew of unpredictable mercenaries, human and machine, to actually find it - and with it their own destruction.

'Banks is a phenomenon' William Gibson

This is the first of the Culture novels and the second one I have read after 'Matter'. This book introduces a fascinating universe and I can see why Banks has kept it alive through the series of books he has set in it. the story is pretty easy to follow once you have adapted to the names, characters, technology and politics and it is fast-paced enough not to become bogged down like other space operas I have read. The story is linear and self-contained with a good ending. Well narrated and recommended to those that like the genre - it is a good example of its type.

Enjoyable

I’ve read this book more times than I care to remember, and I’ve listened to the audio book so many times I’ve lost count. Why? Two reasons.

Reason 1. Iain M. Banks. I lose myself into that mysterious world that surrounds me whenever I read his books. The opening chapter of this book grabs you and the journey begins. I read a lot of books but I always find myself coming back to the Culture series; especially this one.

You ‘live’ with the characters, you feel their personalities, emotions, maybe even thoughts. You share every one of their ups and downs. That’s how well this book is written. To have the imagination that Mr Banks (God rest his soul) had and the ability to put that imagination into words that bring this story alive and make you live it; well that’s something pretty special.

Reason 2. Peter Kenny. One of the main reasons why I keep returning to this and other Iain M. Banks audio books is because of how Peter Kenny narrates them. When I read the book I visualise the characters and events threaded through the story; Peter Kenny brings that all very much alive and leaves you feeling like you’ve just watched a movie.

His voice draws you in and gets you even closer to the story. It’s like he takes you by the hand and leads you through each and every event personally; and boy do you live it, even more than you do when you read the book.

As for the book itself, I’m never one to spoil a good story so I won’t give too much away about plot. I will say that the combined imagination of Mr Banks and Mr Kenny make this a fantastic, immersive experience that takes you through a varied range of emotions more than once, has you sitting on the edge of your seat all too often and takes you away to a world spin from the imagination of a man who is sadly no longer with us but will forever be remembered in stories like this.

Thank you both, so much.

Both Author and Narrator deserve awards.......

A gloriously exciting space opera full of thrills, spectacle and dark humour.

Against a backdrop of violent galactic warfare and giant machines, engagingly fallible individuals pursue their tangled missions. Amidst the mayhem, big questions are asked and small-mindedness satirised.

Peter Kenny's reading, as always, is quite brilliant and his characterisations masterful.

It was a joy to listen to such a fine audio version of a great modern SF book.

A joy from start to finish

I’ve read and reread this book intermittently over the years. It never fails to enter and shock in equal measure. For me it’s the best culture book to start with. Like a culture GSV it’s vast, powerful and filled with surprises. Start here intrepid voyager of the imagination. Hopefully we’ll see you on the other side.

The quintessential Culture novel

I have read the book many years ago. The narrator here was very good. He really brought the characters to life.

Good company on many a delayed rrain journey.
