The sheer amount of copium both Roku and Sosain are on is dangerous. Sosain, in particular, goes from arrogant racist to straight-up super villain, intensely going against his father, to try and cause/allow multiple genocides of others, both foreigners and his own people, because he is concerned with the existence of other competent leaders. How was he allowed to become fire lord? Literally, everyone around him and Roku, from the current fire lord to Taming (Roku's wife), keeps telling Roku that he is a heartless monster, he even thretans his own father to his face, that he will have him assassinated if the old man dosn't stop geting hin his way; they all have too many reasons to stab him, only Roku can bend the facts enough to attempt a reasonable explanation.

Roku himself struggles with trusting others and self-doubt after what happened in the last book, likely because no one will let him forget it; he has more confidence, which manifests as him attacking people who try to explain why the world is developing in unfavourable ways and why his demands are unrealistic. This goes so far as Roku attempting to kill people when he has circumstantial evidence that they might be involved in the plots against him, even when they have explanations and evidence to the contrary.

We get to see many new things introduced, including who might be the inventor of spirit bending, which apparently can be used to control people by altering their chi and throw that there morals and the fact that there are permanent body-altering herps in this world, outright shapshifting, is posable in this world, we meet a person how whent from a born male to a bialogical female becouse of this.
