About this listen

The first book in David Moody's epic Autumn zombie series - available in audio for the first time. Contains bonus short stories not included in the original release.

In less than twenty-four hours a vicious viral epidemic destroys virtually all of the population. Billions are killed. There are no symptoms and no warnings; within moments of infection each victim suffers a violent and agonising death. Only a handful of survivors remain.

And then, animated by "phase two" of the contagion, the dead begin to rise.

At first slow, blind, dumb and lumbering, the bodies soon regain their most basic senses and abilities... sight, hearing, locomotion... As well as the instinct toward aggression and violence.

Held back only by the restraints of their rapidly decomposing flesh, the dead have only one single goal - to destroy the sole remaining attraction in the silent, lifeless world: those who have survived.

Without ever using the 'Z' word, Autumn offers a new perspective on the traditional zombie story. There's no flesh eating, no fast-moving corpses, no gore for gore's sake. Combining the atmosphere and tone of George Romero's classic living dead films with the attitude and awareness of 28 Days (and Years) later, this horrifying novel is filled with relentless cold, dark fear.

Critic reviews

"The best survival horror since Richard Matheson's I am Legend" —Wayne Simmons, author of Flu and Plastic Jesus

"With Autumn, David Moody paints a picture of a marvellously bleak dystopian future where the world belongs to the hungry dead. It's the creepy start to a compelling series." Jonathan Maberry, multiple Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Patient Zero

"Autumn is genuinely creepy, an atmospheric study of what happens when the dead come back - and what we have to do just to survive." David Wellington, author of Monster Island

From start to finish I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. I’ve read the book (brilliant), watched the movie and now listened to the supremely fantastic Aubrey Parsons bringing this to life. 5 stars are not enough

The artwork gives you a good idea of the story, which basically follows a group of survivors in a Zombie apocalypse. What's unusual is that the Z word isn't used, and at least to start with the undead are pretty much harmless. However, they soon become more aggressive and alert.

I won't spoil the story, but I will say this is probably one of the more realistic Z scenarios I have read. Mostly the survivors are a bit useless, and you will be screaming at them to be more sensible and practical. Even those with a bit of sense dither about and you end up willing them to make better choices. It's really well done in that respect. I really liked the short character pieces at the end, sort of World War Z esque. The narration is really good, some excellent voice work and accents. I look forward to checking out the rest of the series.

An unusual take on the Zombie Apocalypse genre

I've been waiting a long time for an audiobook release of the earlier Autumn books, and so was delighted to hear of the arrival of the first in the series.
The story is a grounded take on the end of the world, much like John Wyndham or Terry Nation's 'Survivors', a tone I much prefer to the more action driven approaches that are so often used. It portrays the cataclysmic event as experienced by a small group of characters, and beautifully sets up the world that is greatly expanded on in the following books. The deliberate pacing matches the characters discovery of the unique differences here compared to the typical zombie outbreak.
A nice surprise was the inclusion of several short stories from 'The Human Condition', all of which are relevant to this particular installment.
Aubrey Parsons continues to excel, and I hope that he continues to be the voice of the novels.

The pace and scale picks up in the next part of the series 'The City', the book that made me a lifelong fan.
