Great breakdown of what to expect

I have been looking for resources to help me understand my daughter's most recent behavior. For me, when I need to understand something, I dive deep into research to see if I can figure out what's going on. I've always suspected my daughter had autistic tendencies but when she was younger, it was less prominent compared to her ADHD. She is now a teenager and now I am seeing more of the autistic-type behavior become more dominant. Immediately when I started the book, I could tell this author's writing would be compassionate and take a grounded approach.

The explanations were clear and the guidance laid out is actionable. Out of all the chapters, the chapter on masking is where I focused my attention on. It opened my eyes to behaviors my daughter exhibited that I had previously misunderstood or overlooked. Recognizing these signs of masking, I realized that she was often exerting so much effort just to blend in, which must be exhausting for her. The clarity this chapter provided was both a revelation and a relief. I feel like I have more direction on how I can better help my daughter navigate her emotions and environment more comfortably.

There are so many variations of how children can show emotions and behaviors that at least being able to understand the why behind the behaviors can help us to recognize and help them through them. I appreciate being able to listen to this book and would highly recommend for any parent who suspects their child might be on the spectrum.

Exceptional resource!

If you're a parent of an autistic child, or even just someone who wants to learn more about autism, then this book is for you! Not only does it educate you on autism itself, but also on what you can do to help kids who are affected by it. I also like how it focuses on helping parents and how they can support themselves. Like the author says, becoming a parent is one of the hardest things you'll ever do, and if you have additional challenges that come with that responsibility, it can become overwhelming. The author does a fantastic job of giving practical tools anyone can implement to help children with autism (and their parents) thrive. Highly recommend!
