About this listen

Integrating the latest in attachment theory and research into the use of EMDR.

Much has been written about trauma and neglect and the damage they do to the developing brain. But little has been written or researched about the potential to heal these attachment wounds and address the damage sustained from neglect or poor parenting in early childhood. This book presents a therapy that focuses on precisely these areas. Laurel Parnell, leader and innovator in the field of eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), offers us a way to embrace two often separate worlds of knowing: the science of early attachment relationships and the practice of healing within an EMDR framework. This beautifully written and clinically practical book combines attachment theory with EMDR to teach therapists a new way of healing clients with relational trauma and attachment deficits.

EMDR is a powerful tool for catalyzing integration in an individual across several domains, including memory, narrative, state, and vertical and bilateral integration. In Laurel Parnell's attachment-based modifications of the EMDR approach, the structural foundations of this integrative framework are adapted to further catalyze integration for individuals who have experienced non-secure attachment and developmental trauma.

I enjoyed the client case study’s which really brought the underlying theory to life. It’s something I will incorporate into my own EMDR practice.

Great introduction to attachment focussed EMDR

I found this book to be a really solid and engaging introduction to EMDR. It’s clear the author knows their stuff, and the explanations of the process, theory, and clinical outcomes were easy to follow and often quite moving. The case studies, in particular, were helpful for seeing how EMDR unfolds in real-life scenarios.

That said, I found myself wishing the book included a broader range of client experiences. Most of the cases seemed to involve people who were already very open to deep emotional work — often therapists or those already immersed in healing practices themselves. While inspiring, it felt a bit idealized at times.

I would have appreciated more examples of working with clients who struggle with resistance, skepticism, or shame around this kind of emotional processing — people who aren’t naturally inclined to "go there." These are common dynamics in real-world therapy, and seeing how EMDR can navigate those challenges would have made the book even stronger and more relatable.

i wish the case examples woukdnt be so rosy as it doesnt feel authentic

As an EMDR therapist I've listened to all of Laurel Parnell's books and I know AF-EMDR is like the holy grail of her work. What I learnt from this book wasn't as much as I thought in terms of content, and that's a good thing because it took the mysticism out of AF EMDR and made me realise that it's only very subtle tweaks to the 8 phase standard protocol. It's helped me to learn that attachment trauma isn't a big scary thing and that DID is a totally separate problem (although this no doubt stems from attachment wounding) but it helped me to realise how much attachment wounding is a common experience in our clients and I now feel more confident as a therapist to go to the earlier attachment trauma memories. Essentially this book has taught me everything I need to know about resource figures and that's the only difference but there are so many good learning points and creative suggestions. So if you're an EMDR therapist, don't worry as you know most of it already, this book just gives a few 'pro tips' to add to what you already do. For clients, this will be a great way of understanding what you need and also how emdr can help you to health the early attachment wounds and the case studies at the end are amazing.

Great book for clients and therapists alike

The book is written wonderfully . It definitely reflects the therapeutic reality that the great majority of our patients are complicated cases. They can not be treated using a standart EMDR protocol only and requires extensive preparation.
The narrators voice is soft and calm to listen, although a little bit longer pauses after paragraphs and chapters could be beneficial for reflection on information heard.

Great book to explore EMDR possibilities further
