About this listen

Like so many of the most popular classic novels, it's Tolstoy's delicate and insightful exploration of what it means to be human that makes Anna Karenina such a valuable work. There's no denying that it transcends time to touch the hearts of contemporary listeners.

Anna Karenina seems to have everything - beauty, wealth, popularity and an adored son. But she feels that her life is empty until the moment she encounters the impetuous officer Count Vronsky.

Translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude.

Would you consider the audio edition of Anna Karenina to be better than the print version?

Not better, just different. Both excellent.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Anna Karenina?

Hard to say, loved the descriptions of the different characters, and their ways of life.

Have you listened to any of David Horovitch’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Not previously heard David readings. I think he reads beautifully.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Much more cry than laugh!

Any additional comments?

A wonderful story, beautifully told.

Brilliant story, beautifully read

Took me a long time to listen to this, I could have done without the lectures, but I have read from a reviewer elsewhere that he appreciated these more later in life. Story was good, although I can't believe that such an intelligent woman could let herself end up in such a predicament, the grass is not always greener. I suppose boring lives do not make for great fiction. A classic read, especially since a new movie version is being made. The narrator did a stellar job, it would also be interesting to hear this read by a female narrator a good listen...

Anna Karenina wasn't the best audiobook I've listened to but was by no means the worst. David Horovitch is a great narrator and really gave the story that additional lift that I needed to get through it, I did listen to this in combination with reading a physical copy and that really works for me. It was an incredible book that I definitely feel benefited listening to the majority of. I've never listened to his performances before this but will definitely look for something else by him in the future.

As for characters I think it was Levin who I liked the most. However, even though I absolutely loathed her at points, Anna was an incredible character and possibly one of the best I've read in fiction. The writing of her and the full breadth of her character was incredible and very much deserving of the many hours this book took up.

It's an audiobook that I felt required a bit more time and, rather than my usual 2x speed I listened to this on 1.5x which was, for me, a good pace. Tolsoy's way with words is beautiful and I can't wait to explore more of his work in the future!

Loved It!

It is testament to David Horovitch's abilities to be able to carry this mighty weighty work. I read this book when I was fourteen years old and thought it was wonderful. Asking the great questions and the burning passion and romance of Anna and Vronsky. i read it again in my late twenties and was still gripped in the thoughts and feelings and questions it put forward. And now decades later I find it rather immature particularly Leven's constant analysis of himself which rambles on looking for definitive answers for religion. No doubt at the time it was written the scandal of Anna and Vronsky's choices, of Alexey Karenin's issues with divorce would have been much more relevant.
It is a mighty work and to complete such a piece of writing is truly the work of genius. That said for me now I no longer find it insightful, moving nor romantic.

Excellent narration from David Horovitch!

I missed reading many classics when I was young, being too busy to read slow books, so I'm catching up with Audible. I have really enjoyed most of the books (Hardy, Dickens and indeed this one, hated Thackery!) but this is just too long in todays ideom. BUT if it is the only way to get it do as the characterisation and is amazing, the messages very clear and it builds a great picture of Russia before the revolution and the very unsettled times.

Buy the unabridged version if there is one!
