Summary

A princess is missing and a peace treaty is on the verge of collapse in this new Veronica Speedwell adventure from the New York Times best-selling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.

January 1889. As the newest member of the Curiosity Club - an elite society of brilliant, intrepid women - Veronica Speedwell is excited to put her many skills to good use. As she assembles a memorial exhibition for pioneering mountain climber Alice Baker-Greene, Veronica discovers evidence that the recent death was not a tragic climbing accident but murder. Veronica and her natural historian beau, Stoker, tell the patron of the exhibit, Princess Gisela of Alpenwald, of their findings. With Europe on the verge of war, Gisela's chancellor, Count von Rechstein, does not want to make waves - and before Veronica and Stoker can figure out their next move, the princess disappears.

Having noted Veronica's resemblance to the princess, von Rechstein begs her to pose as Gisela for the sake of the peace treaty that brought the princess to England. Veronica reluctantly agrees to the scheme. She and Stoker must work together to keep the treaty intact while navigating unwelcome advances, assassination attempts, and Veronica's own family - the royalty who has never claimed her.

Love it!

I have really enjoyed the Veronica Speedwell series. I love her writing and how she writes the characters' interactions. The stories are engaging and fun. An Unexpected Peril was a book I devoured. Also, I love how Angèle Masters brings Deanna Raybourn's characters to life. I hope to see more books in this series!

speed up narration

I found that at a speed of 1.15x the voice of Stoker is more bearable. I love this series, and the banter between the main characters is delightful.

They keep getting better...

Yet another exciting adventure for Veronica and Stoker. The author does such a masterful job of keeping multiple mysteries in play, and at the same time interweaving Veronica’s own story into the narrative. Ms. Raybourn also accomplished this in the previous book, remembering that her readers are invested not only in the storyline but also in the lives her protagonists. While the writing is amazing, Angele Master is what really brings the characters to life. I’ve never heard a voice actor so such a wonderful job bringing characters to life. Her narration keeps me choosing the audio book instead of the written word.
I highly recommend this book.

Maybe it’s the narrator but...

I’ve listen to all of the previous books and, while the stories have been interesting enough, the snotty arrogant shrilly heroine and the rough grunting hero finally became unbearable. This time I couldn’t make it through.

One of the best series available. A truly amazing partnership between author and narrator. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Great read, very bad listen

The story was fun and well written as expected from Deanna Rayburn. The narration of Stoker’s voice and especially the German men was so annoying that I was unable to finish the book. Change narrator please!

Read for Entertainment, not for Social Issues

I thoroughly enjoyed previous books by this author. Plots were intricate and well developed. Loved the suspense and the tension between the two main characters but Unexpected Peril had none of these. Veronica turned into a little sanctimonious, preachy little prig and her lover seems to have lost all symbols of his manhood. It was easy to figure out in the early part of the plot who the guilty party was and why...no surprises. Several authors I have always enjoyed jumped on the bandwagon using their characters to make social statements in this year's books that accompany sermon after sermon ad nauseum. Alexa reads books to me as I drift off to sleep. The good books keep me awake while mediocre ones put me down quickly. Sadly, Unexpected Peril was an excellent sleep aid.

Credit to the Narrator

Angeles Masters reading of Stoker and Veronica is highly entertaining and well done. I always listen to the books in this series instead of reading because I enjoy her so much. The story was clever and engaging but was missing some of the characters and witty humor usually present. I would still recommend it if you have read the previous books in the series and am looking forward to finding out what the next adventure will entail!
