About this listen

Amy and Sam have history. Can a plot twist change their story?

Much like Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy, Amy and Sam can't stand each other. From their days sparring in English class, to everything that happened after that night, they are experts at being enemies. What possible interest could a village girl like Amy have in the stuck-up son of a lord anyway?

But when Amy has to leave her glamorous London publishing life to look after her grandmother back home, there's no escaping this annoying man - and his annoyingly gorgeous hair. It's inconvenient that everyone keeps singing his praises, but Amy knows his real story: a heartless toff who can't be trusted. Or does she?

When a shocking twist throws them close together - and right back to where they started - tension simmers. Is Amy and Sam's story about to get a rewrite?

I adored this book! Laura Starkey is such a talented writer, I’ve listened to and fallen in love with both the books she has written so far, and can’t wait for the next one! The characters felt really believable, and the setting was perfect. I hope someone starts a romantic fiction festival (or hopefully one already exists) because I’d be there in a heartbeat. Definitely give this a go!

Loved it!

Although a fairly easy (if predictable) listen, I have to admit I struggled to get through this. Amy was frustrating for much of the book - her obsession with Sam’s wealth/title got quite old quite quickly, and the fact that she was going to worst case scenario all the time was tiring. I also felt the argument they had after she overheard Sam’s chat with his dad was ridiculous - of course he cares about the upkeep of his house, of course he wants to raise money to do that! Why wouldn’t he?? It’s his home, and by all rights, a historical building that should be preserved, so I really can’t understand why she was acting as if Sam was the worst person in the world. It was all just a little bit frustrating and had me rolling my eyes.

Overall, it was fine and the narrator did well, but I don’t think this is a story I will be revisiting.

I really wanted to love The Love Edit—and in many ways, I did. The plot was engaging, the setting was vivid, and I thoroughly enjoyed the supporting characters as well as the main male lead. Laura Starkey’s writing style is smooth and easy to get lost in, which made me keep turning the pages.

But unfortunately, the main female character made this a frustrating read for me. She felt so unlikeable—judgmental, hot and cold, and hard to root for. I kept hoping she’d grow on me as the chapters went on, but it never happened. Since this is a romance, it really pulled down the overall experience.

If the central romance had been stronger and the heroine more likeable, this could easily have been a four-star read. Instead, I was left more irritated than invested, which is why I can’t rate it higher.

I found the protagonist insufferable and didn't want her to get her happy ending. I also really didn't like the way the book handled the issue of class. It reads like a middle class author who secretly thinks working class resentments are nothing more than petty jealousy against rich people, which made the main character all the more infuriating. It would have been better to use a northern voice actor as putting on the accent for speech but not narration was jarring.

Wasn't rooting for them
