The story was captivating and a great entry into fantasy, Admit that it was a little slow to start, but the narration more than made up for that slower pace by injecting life into the various characters with his voice, massively enhancing the story-telling overall.

The writing quality has a lot of promise for future stories so I think this author is one to watch!

Finally, I must say just how blown away I was by the range of the narrator who was on par with some of the best narrators I've heard! Another one to watch out for!

I found the story quite confusing at points, I wanted more background on the characters. I really liked the creation of the world though, and the different voices for each character really added to my enjoyment of the book.

This is a fast-paced fantasy adventure which drew me in from the beginning. It has a swashbuckling feel to it which I think will appeal to those who like an action-packed story. That said, what really engaged me were the elements of mystery, as the twists in the narrative made me want to keep listening to see how the various plot threads would resolve. I also found that I did care about the main character, in particular, and wanted to know what would happen to him.

I found the writing generally very good in the context of young adult literature, although there were moments when I felt it could have been a little more elegant, and there was one (relatively minor) plot development I didn’t really understand. However, overall it was a highly enjoyable listen.

Generally I found the narration to be excellent. The narrator has a mellifluous voice and handled the multiple characters and accents confidently, which really helped to bring the world to life. It was a little jarring for me towards the end when (small spoiler alert) Althalos’ sister spoke with an American accent, as he speaks with a British accent and there is not much apparent reason for the difference. At the other end of the scale, the Scottish accents fit the dwarves perfectly!

I was sent a review copy of this but have tried to be honest and clear.

For all fans of The Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, this is a roller-coaster ride of a story with fantastic creatures, monsters, villains and heroes. The skill of the narrator makes each character come alive. Be warned if you are a bit squeamish however. There are some ‘bloody’ bits but these all add to the exciting story line. I’d thoroughly recommend this book. Once started you’ll find it hard to wait for the next chapter!
