His insistence on high standards together with a perfection of tactics and techniques did not always win him friends, but that was never the intention. His aim was to win each encounter, each battle, and ultimately the war itself with a minimum loss of life among his men. He was once told by one of his subordinates, "Shames, you are the meanest, roughest son of a bitch I've ever had to deal with. But you brought us home."

It’s hard to engage with the audio version as the guy reading it is sooooo boring. Sometimes he’s like an automated robot and you just zone out. It’s a shame as I’d probably enjoy the written book more, it could be a 5 start review and probably should. I don’t really know as I end up realising I’ve not been listening intently for the last 20 mins.

It’s packed with detail, I’d say too much for my personal taste as this can tend to bog the story down - the author seems to be obsessed with maps.

Wonderfully told story of WW2 paratrooper experiences. And so nice to listen to an American who doesn't boast or "slagg off" his Allies.

This book began OK but deep into the story the audio would skip back at least three chapters forcing me to retrace my steps and run through 30 second forward skips in an attempt to find the right place. This occurred way too many times to make listening pleasurable and is the first time it has happened with any books in my library.

Generally, I felt the narration was a tad dry but I got used to the voice after a while. The story itself, of course, is historical. No issues there at all.
