About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Agincourt: Battle of the Scarred King by Michael Livingston, read by Rupert Farley.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2024 HISTORICAL WRITERS’ ASSOCIATION NON-FICTION CROWN AWARD

'It’s quite a feat to write an account of England’s most famous battle that makes the reader feel like they’re experiencing history that is fresh, new and exhilarating.' Dan Snow

This groundbreaking study by Mike Livingston, as featured on History Hit's Agincourt, presents a new interpretation of Henry V's great victory.

From Shakespeare’s ‘band of brothers’ speech to its appearances in numerous films, Agincourt rightfully has a place among a handful of conflicts whose names are immediately recognized around the world. Renowned medieval historian Mike Livingston provides a new look at this famous battle, with a foreword by world famous historic novelist Bernard Cornwell.

Agincourt takes us back to the original sources, including the French battle plan that still survives today, to give a new interpretation, one that challenges the traditional site of the battlefield itself. It is a thrilling new history that not only rewrites the battle as we know it, but also provides fresh insights into the men who fought and died there.©2023 Michael Livingston and Bernard Cornwell (P)2023 Bloomsbury Publishing Plc

I like the idea of reinterpreting history and historical events to get a better insight into the decisions and outcomes.
I would recommend all of the authors books so far as he approches the subject matter with an unbiased opinion.
The narrator is excellent.
I also think archeology should be allowed to investigate the ideas brought forward in this work and previous works.

Just as his Crecy book broke down an extremely complicated and fragmented story perfectly, this did the same thing. The author is able to piece together a battle with incredible descriptive power - and from the perspective and horror of what an ordinary soldier would have experienced.

There’s things in there that even myself as a keen medieval amateur had never heard about - such as the parlay on the morning of the battle.

Would recommend to any person interested in Henry V and the folklore of Agincourt

Great book Shane about the narrator- just wrong for a non fiction book.
Having heard the author on podcasts- it’s a pity he didn’t read it himself as he has a better voice.

Apart from that an excellent book - busts many myths, especially the ones from Shakespeare’s play.

Boring narrator

Great author I especially loved crecy, read it twice. Now we have an in depth look at what actually happened on the day of Agincourt. Phenomenal research and fascinating to contemplate a possible new battle sight. It dose go rather deep into details at points which could be abit tedious for the average person wanting a general picture but if you're a geek you will love it. Get Google earth up when the battle begins or a map of the area to help with what's actually going because place names and movements can become dizzying, but I definitely recommend.

An in depth new look at the battle of Agincourt

This is an original approach to describing the Battle of Agincourt. The author challenges much of the established thinking around some key aspects of the battle. The narration is good.

Unfortunately, in trying take a fresh approach, there is too much time spent rubbishing the work of other historians. It’s as though the author hates his fellow academics more than the French hated the English.
