Summary

The next Agatha Raisin mystery from 23 million copy-selling author M. C. Beaton, the Queen of Cosy Crime, about an eccentric Cotswolds-based detective with an erratic love life and a penchant for G and Ts . . .

Agatha and her assistant, Toni, are driving to their friend Bill Wong's wedding, thinking of nothing more than what the beautiful bride will be wearing when a terrified young man comes running down the country lane towards them wearing. . . nothing at all.

The encounter leads them to become embroiled with a naturist group, a disappearing corpse, fantasy games, witchcraft, an ice cream empire, intrigue and murder. In the meantime, Agatha's hectic life swirls along at dizzying pace, her private detective agency as busy as ever and her private affairs in turmoil - old loves to contend with and a new suitor on the scene.

Then she finds herself in deadly danger when she begins to close in on a suspected murderer and the sinister nature of the ice cream business leads her to a chilling conclusion.

Another Raisin mystery...again

I do love the Agatha Raisin stories, but this one had nothing new to add to the series. It felt like a rehash of older stories, and a way to cash in on the late MC Beaton name. Worth a listen, but probably as an introduction to the series.
Penelope Keith was as magnificent as ever as narrator.

Disappointing

I can't quite put my finger on it, but something intrinsically Agatha was missing.

Pale imitation of MC Beaton's work.

Under RW Green's gaze, Agatha just becomes vain, competitive, & needlessly spiteful. He hasn't got MC Beaton's ability to make Agatha likeable, because he lacks her understanding of the vulnerability of the outwardly glamorous woman. Consequently, I couldn't care less what happens in Agatha's love life, &, without that engaging romantic element, the books are just silly murder mysteries.

Worst still, RW Green is absolutely hopeless at writing Charles, & long standing Agatha Raisin fans like me can't help remembering the best Agatha Raisin novels, in which there was a highly engaging romance between Charles & Agatha. Now their relationship is reduced to describing their post-meal sex as 'afters'. Beam me up, Scotty!

The Devil’s…… disappointment

I am a HUGE fan of MC Beaton and her Agatha Raisin stories, brought to life by the wonderful and endlessly talented Penelope Keith (we’ll bypass book 2 which was not narrated by Penelope and bombed as a result); I have listened to the whole series (currently 33 books) on constant repeat for the last five years as I enjoy them so much and have gotten to know these characters intimately as a result. I was sad to hear of MC Beaton’s passing and hoped there were still gems to come in the Agatha series that she’d squirrelled away for the future.

Book 31 ‘Hot to Trot’ was classic Agatha and clearly Mrs Beaton’s full writing influence behind it although RW Green collaborated. Then came ‘Down the Hatch’ which was noticeably different; personality changes with characters, Agatha’s office appearing to have developed a completely separate room for Agatha, Mrs Friedman suddenly being called ‘Helen’ a lot (rarely done before), lots of unnecessary ‘padding’ to the story and something just….missing. I was disappointed but put it down to the first book since Marion’s passing with RW Green maybe finding his feet and looked forward to the next book which I’d ordered months in advance……

The day came, ‘Devil’s Delight’ was released. Again we had an entire duplicate pre-amble about MC Beaton’s life and how RW Green got involved in writing these stories which we’d heard in the previous book, accounting for two chapters before ‘Chapter One’ finally starts. This is hard to say as a lover of Agatha but this book bored me to tears. Snakes and b@st@rds! Lots of needless padding of storylines again, a story that never really got off the ground, even more personality changes to all main characters (seriously, what’s happened to Charles? He’s totally changed when RW Green remembers to bring him into the story, which is an occasional line here and there in this and the previous book, rather than the fought-for strong friendship he’s always shared with Agatha that’s been allowed to dwindle) and the story just didn’t flow.
Spoiler alert: Agatha bouncing between a variety of men in the two weeks James was on holiday? Whilst contemplating re-marrying James? Seriously?! The book ended with even more uncertainty about Agatha’s life getting all wrapped up into a glorious happy ever after that she deserves and appeared to drift off into ridiculously boring and weird territory, very un-Agatha like. It really pains me to say that but the stories, the characters, they’ve just lost something with Marion’s sad passing. Even with the wonderful Penelope Keith working all her magic, something is still missing. As much as I’d love for Agatha’s adventures to continue, I will honestly struggle listening to this ‘new’ version of Agatha and friends….. Please, please, please RW Green, listen / read all the back catalogue again, not as a writer but a fan, absorb these characters, get to know them as we have and bring back what’s now missing or you may be about to witness the demise of some much loved characters and series of books.

Not the best......

I've listened to all 32 previous Agatha Raisin books and enjoyed them. I can safely say that this is the worst. There's something missing in this book. It's not as engaging as the previous books.
Penelope Keith is excellent as usual.

Don't bother

Having enjoyed the Agatha Raisin for many years I thought I would give the new author one last try. I'm sorry but the writing is poor and the story line just plain awful.
Goodbye Agatha!

Complete let down

I've love the Agatha Raisin books, but the newer ones are just awful.
The characters are souless, the stories are just ridiculous and hard to follow, mainly because the can't hold your attention.
Really sad to give this a 1 star, but I've tried to listen to this one so many times and have given up.

Don't bother wasting your money, the originals were the best.....
