Summary

Daniel's story is one of extraordinary faith in God lived out at the pinnacle of executive power. It tells of four teenage friends, born in the tiny state of Judah about 26 centuries ago, but captured by Nebuchadnezzar, emperor of Babylon. Daniel describes how they eventually rose to the top echelons of administration. Daniel and his friends did not simply maintain their private devotion to God; they maintained a high-profile witness in a pluralistic society antagonistic to their faith. That is why their story has such a powerful message for us. Society tolerates the practice of Christianity in private and in church services, but it increasingly deprecates public witness. If Daniel and his compatriots were with us today they would be in the vanguard of the public debate. What was it that gave that ancient foursome, Daniel and his three friends, the strength and conviction to be prepared, often at great risk, to swim against the flow?

love the book, but not the narration.

Fantastic content as ever from Lennox. Seriously let down by the narration. Very poor pronunciation

Narrator is pretty awful

I listened to Against the Flow. I had purchased 4 other John Lennox audio books to listen to but I can't do it with William Crockett's narration. Mispronunciation is rampant and distracting and his is a singsongy, pleading, preachy tone...ugh.

Wonderful book! Narration needs work.

I loved the book! Dr. Lennox is brilliant. However, the narrator seriously needs to review pronunciation on many of these words. The last book I heard read by him was a little concerning. This time it was downright frustrating.

Great content

The subject matter of this book is of great interest to me, but wish another reader had been chosen. His reading style and odd pronunciations seemed somewhat mechanical and distracted from the content.

Great book – poorly read.

I always enjoy the writing and speaking of John Lennox. I will need to get the actual book and read it myself. The monotone and stilted style of the reader made it very difficult for me to appreciate the content. May work for others.

Confirming that God knows the future

The first 5 chapters show that God is greater than any human power by protecting Daniel’s 3 friends through the fire and then protecting Daniel from the mouths of hungry lions.
The last part shows God knows the future by describing —in great detail — what would happen long after Daniel was dead.

Great book

Well written and presented. Excellent new knowledge for me on the history and background of Daniel. Helped to understand the context of what was happening to him and his friends. Gave me good in site to how God works and why. I would recommend for anyone trying to learn more and grow.

Best Book

Great book, and great narration.

This is the best work on the book of Daniel I have ever listened to. I intend to purchase the hardcover and read myself.

The content is interesting,

As much as I’m interested in what the author has to say, I cannot get past the readers performance. I have no doubt he is well suited for other types of books, just not this one.

New insights into historicity of Daniel

Provides new insights into the historicity of Daniel. Narrator is at first off-putting due to his ungrammatical pronunciations of gerunds and his mispronunciations of “subsequently” and other words, but his tone grew on me through the book and I enjoyed his voice.
