Summary

A definitive guide to understanding those on the autism spectrum so you can make meaningful connections.

Do you work with people who are on the autism spectrum, and you want to find ways to connect with them? Are you worried that your lack of understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is causing issues in relationships with your friends, family, or coworkers? Do you suspect someone you are close to may have ASD and you want to better understand what they deal with on a daily basis? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you have come to the right place. By understanding the neurodivergent or atypical brain and finding ways to better support those with autism, we can begin to change this.

This audiobook will tell you how to do just that. In this guide, you will discover:

  • A look at neurotypical and neurodivergent brains, and how it is important to understand “normal” as a subjective term
  • What ableism is, and why negative attitudes toward ASD cause those on the spectrum to feel like they need to mask or camouflage their true selves
  • A look at the eight senses (yes, eight!) and how the neurodiverse brain may deal with sensory overload on a regular basis
  • Communication difficulties of those with ASD and strategies for communicating thoughtfully and effectively with atypical individuals
  • The struggles of living in a neurotypical world when you have a neurodivergent brain–and the mental health struggles this can cause
  • Why people on the spectrum sometimes get stuck in black-and-white thinking, and how to break free of the cognitive distortions that cause this way of thinking
  • Common executive functioning issues with ASD (like time management and impulsivity), and proven ways to help in these areas
  • The steps to getting a diagnosis if you think you may be on the spectrum
  • And much more.

Living with autism doesn’t mean living away from society. Take the first steps in understanding adult autism today.

An Exceptional Resource

This is an exceptional resource that provides both compassion and invaluable information for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and aiming to build more meaningful connections with individuals on the spectrum.

Kelley's book takes a comprehensive approach to exploring the various ways in which our brains function, emphasizing the crucial point that "normal" is a subjective concept. The audiobook delves into the detrimental effects of ableism on individuals with ASD, shedding light on why they might feel compelled to mask their true selves. It's a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing neurodiversity.

Moreover, Kelley addresses executive functioning issues often associated with ASD, such as time management and impulsivity, and offers proven methods to assist individuals in these areas. The inclusion of practical solutions makes this audiobook an invaluable guide for both those on the spectrum and those wanting to understand and support them.

Furthermore, the audiobook outlines the steps to obtaining an ASD diagnosis, offering guidance for individuals who may be considering this process or seeking to understand their own or a loved one's situation.

Great support for understanding autism

Working in schools and offices for my role, I deal with special needs and one area I have missed out in training was autism. This audible was great at showcasing how to see autism from those who have it and providing real life strategies to help them in their day to day. Well narrated and full of great information. Highly recommended.

Fantastic book and a great help!

I found this book very helpful and informative in relation to supporting adults with autism. The author provides you with a well-structured, comprehensive guide by explaining what neurodivergent and neurotypical conditions are right through to communication problems and when to get a diagnosis.

I particularly gained a lot of value from the advice on how to converse with people with autism and what to practice, such as being patient and clear and avoiding things like sarcasm and body language. I am guilty of taking these things for granted and not being aware of them, and this book has reinforced my attention to these factors.

I also liked how the author goes a step further and explains why and the meaning of the symptoms that people with autism show, such as outbursts and the need for routine, etc. A clever quote from the book I found useful was, “Autistic people see the world from inside a glass room.” This simple phrase puts into perspective what way those with autism see the world and gives us a much better understanding.

Overall, great book, and perfect for those that are wishing to further their knowledge in supporting adults with autism.

Very Insightful Book on Living with Autism

This audiobook gave me a much better, deeper, and more sophisticated understanding of autism and how it presents in adults. Prior to listening to this book I had never really stopped to think about what I can do to be a better communicator with people who have autism and how I can better understand how difficult it must be for them to function in a world that does not understand them. This book really gave me a great sense of empathy and offers many easy-to-follow strategies in order to better understand autism, to support friends with autism, and how to be a better communicator. If you know anyone on the Autism spectrum this audiobook is SO helpful, I highly recommend it.

Insightful guide to understanding autism

This audiobook is a much-needed and much-appreciated dive into understanding the autistic spectrum and how it affects many people differently. My roommate has suspected that he's autistic but keeps putting off getting a diagnosis, I found a lot of overlap in his mannerisms/idiosyncrasies with this book's list of behaviors and overstimulating triggers. I now have the tools to start the conversation, while removing as much unconscious judgement and blind ignorance as possible, to have an ongoing constructive dialogue with compassion and empathy. Learning about our three additional senses was super useful, I hadn't even considered things like balance, temperature, and spatial awareness, much less how overstimulating any of these senses could trigger a meltdown in certain people. The chapter on black-and-white thinking was particularly eye-opening, as I've butted heads with a previous romantic partner who had an all-or-nothing "my way or the highway" stance on many issues I saw as trivial; had I learned these de-escalation and perspective-shifting techniques earlier, it could've saved us many headaches and arguments back then. At least I'm better equipped now to handle conversations like that in the future, thanks to this book. Being on the autistic spectrum isn't a stigma or disease, but rather a different way of thinking and interacting with the world that has many positives in its distinct thought processes. This has opened the door to my better understanding of neurodiversity, I can't recommend this book enough!

A Compassionate Resource

I absolutely loved this audiobook! I could not stop listening to it, and I'm so thankful for the author's insight and personal experience working with individuals on the autism spectrum. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding neurotypical and neurodivergent brains in order to build meaningful connections, as well as the importance of dispelling common misconceptions. The guide provides actionable advice for effective communication and offers practical solutions for executive functioning issues such as time management and impulsivity. Moreover, it offers guidance on the diagnostic process, as well as how to create a supportive environment for those with autism. The clear narration and practical tips make this invaluable for educators, healthcare professionals, and anyone who interacts with individuals on the spectrum. It really adds a compassionate tone to the audiobook, making it an accessible and informative resource for all listeners. I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone seeking to understand Autism Spectrum Disorder better, foster empathy and understanding, and bridge the gap between the neurotypical and neurodivergent worlds.

Very Helpful Guide!

As the parent of a teenager with autism, I have been getting more and more curious about the changes that we may face when she becomes an adult - this book provided quite a bit of helpful information for the days ahead. I was especially interested in the chapter about ableism and camouflaging, as I know that this is an issue in my daughter's life right now. The chapter about executive functioning was also key for me, as my daughter has a very high level of executive dysfunction. I thought the narration was clear and easy to listen to - highly recommend this book.
